One of our favorite dining places is opening a new restaurant up the street, and has been so busy we have not been able to dine there (the old place, Cafe Intermezzo).

This is good news, for us anyway, and a sign everything isn't collapsing.  We have had a lot of closures.

Colony Square was built 52 years back when this area was a dump.  It was an attempt at a "mini-city", and only partly worked, but they have redone it, still under construction, and it might turn out to be an neat place.

The arts center is across the street.  If you ever visit the ATL, midtown is the place to stay, subway link to the airport etc.

I was at a Halloween party last month and one of the Ford engineers drove one to the party that she had just picked up in Detroit earlier that day. A couple of friends and I went out to investigate. It had some pretty nice features, but was wrong in so many ways. As a Mustang guy that grew up with a 1964 1/2 Mustang and a couple since then, I told her that while that car was nice and had some nice features, calling something that looked like a station wagon a Mustang was simply wrong. She stated that they were associating it to the Mustang as far as driving experience.  I said, that may be but it does NOT look like a Mustang. We agreed to disagree and went back into the party and drank more beer.

Not sure if anyone has read alternate history by Harry Turtledove.

I read one called The Guns of the South, which ended up being a sci-fi version of alternate history. A bunch of post-apartheid South Africans discover time travel, and decide that if they can just get the American Civil War to go the opposite direction, their own failed subjugation of blacks in South Africa won't have to end--so they supply the south with AK-47's. There's a lot more to it, and I realize that sounds ridiculous, but it's not a bad read.

A much better (and less fantastic) one was Ruled Brittania. Premise is that after the Spanish (rather than the English) wins the war in the late 1500's and conquers Britain. The story comes down to a young playwright who is tasked with writing a play that will cause the English to rise up and take back their nation from the Spanish... I'm sure you can imagine which young playwright is the star of the show lol...
So I've really spent more time on the Civil War than I intended to in my evolving American Military History course.  One of the things that has taken me more time is to flesh out the story of the Confederate commerce raiders beyond just the doings of the CSS Alabama.  It seems like many of these ships of the Confederate Nay visited South Africa, and were able to obtain many services--refueling, reprovisioning, repairing, replenishment of crews--there.  All very cordial, hip-hip, jolly good show there.  A white-supremacist affinity, perhaps.

in completely "other" news................

PORT CLINTON - Even as fishing in the “Walleye Capital of World” has certainly been living up to its name over the past two years, experts are projecting it could be on the verge of getting even better.

That capital, of course, is none other than Lake Erie, or even more specifically, its western basin, where the walleye population is reaching what scientists have described as “unprecedented” heights and is leading to incredible catch rates for anglers.

“Walleye fishing has never been better,” said Travis Hartman, a biologist with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Wildlife, about western Lake Erie.

Trawl surveys in western Lake Erie have documented enormous walleye hatches in 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2020.

Although 2020 is the smallest of those four examples, it is still considered another great hatch.

“Prior to 2015, I’d have been doing jumping jacks over our catches this year for young-of-year walleyes,” Hartman said. “We are in an incredible period of production.”

Is there a known reason for this?  Is there some natural predator or parasite of walleyes that has been depleted?  Has the lake gotten warmer?  Has the oxygen level in the lake changed?

While Lake Erie’s record high water levels in recent years have plagued some communities along the western coast, such as the city of Port Clinton, with frequent flooding — it also appears to be one of the most significant contributing factors to the booming walleye production.

“It’s becoming clear to me that high water is very helpful in producing walleye,” Hartman said. “If you look at the ‘80s, we had very high water. If you look right now, we’re in that same type of high water scenario, actually higher.”

He said he does not yet know precisely what dynamics associated with the lake’s high water levels cause the increase in walleye production, but speculated about the possibility of more sustained plankton blooms that walleye larvae need to eat or, perhaps, currents bringing larvae inshore, potentially putting them in nursery habitats and a better chance of surviving.

“The bottom line is, when we have high water, we’re producing a lot of walleye,” he said.

Another likely contributing factor is preceding hard winter seasons, meaning late ice coverage and a delayed spawning season for walleye.

“But these last years have shown, we don’t have to have a hard winter,” Hartman said. “When you look at the west and you look at production, high water trumps everything.”

I've been following this a bit.  One reason offered by some locals has been high water levels has created a better environment for larvae, as evidence for better #s of walleyes hatching/surviving outside of the predominant western basins.

I've noticed the perch numbers are better too.

Edit: ha, FF reading what I read.  I saw this while watching local Midwest fishing shows these past months.

Walleye is very good eats.

We caught a lot of yellowtail snapper on Saturday, so that was a good meal Saturday night.
