We'll be flying up for Parents Weekend, although that's not until 10/10.

Today is his first day of class...

It's probably because it signifies a major change in your household that has been stable for the last few decades. Kids at home, watching them grow.  You know the day is coming, but it's always a long time away.  My own kids are almost all grown, one 23 and one 19, but the years fly by.  We *know* we're old, but yet with having kids and teenagers at home, we're in the thick with the younger millennial parents (you and I were always on the far right of the older parents most likely).  Most people that have kids our age are in their mid 40's, and here we are over 50, basically posers in our own world.

But when they get grown, and move away, reality hits, and you suddenly cross that line.  We both know how the years fly by, one minute your dropping her off to college, the next you'll be walking her down the isle.  I look at pictures and think how was my dad there, and I realize it's me.

We're getting old, now we can't even fake it.

You're exactly where I am, wondering how you're handling it, emotionally?  Each day is a little better than the last for me, but I'm definitely still not OK and don't reckon I will be any time soon.  It's such a strange thing, knowing I have zero control over any of it and it's all just going to happen anyway.

Yeah having to get back to my own life is hard.  I'm old and not nearly as much fun as I used to be, but while I was full-time-parenting I was able to sort of hide that. :86:

I will say one thing that made me happy yesterday-- going into her room, and bathroom, and cleaning the hell out of all of it.  She left in a whirlwind and only mildly sorted through her gear, just trying to figure out what few things were important enough to take with her.  But she's also sort of a slob anyway.  So it was extremely satisfying going in, sorting though everything, washing all the bedding which who knows how long that's been, washing all the clothes thrown on the floor, sorting it all, and putting it away in her dresser and closet.  Throwing away gobs of crumpled old papers at the bottom of her half-dozen bags and backpacks strewn about the floor.  And the bathroom... wow, so gross.  Just about using straight bleach was the only way to manage it.

It's all really nice now, should be a relief for her when she comes home.  I'm probably fixating on it because it's one small way I can still help her out, even if she doesn't know and almost certainly won't appreciate it that much when she does come home! :57:

We went to breakfast at a nice little place near us with nice outdoor seating.  You order at the counter and they bring your food, very low key, beautiful day to sit out and watch folks walking by, usually with dogs.

I do really like dogs, a lot.  And Dawgs.  And Nick Chubb.

I can't identify with what you and brad are going through, though I wish I could.  One thing I do understand here is the cleaning her rooms part.  As soon as my youngest stepson has saved however much he thinks it is he needs to put on a down-payment for a house and vacates the premises, there is going to be a major reckoning in that part of the house.  Not even a massive cleaning.  The back bedroom which he's turned into his living room is getting a re-model.  Undecided on whether his bedroom will be remodeled, but that back bedroom......yeesh.  "Slob" is no longer the word for it.  That space has been used and misused for so long, without the proper cleaning and upkeep that should accompany it, that it just needs to be nuked from orbit at this point.  Also, the carpet never recovered from him and his brother's adolescence when they were building god knows what back there and experimenting in god knows how kind of ways.  It didn't get better in this one's college years, where he took over the room when his brother left.....his adult hobbies include painting (he's quite good), but he's not exactly careful with his paints, far as I can tell.  The bathroom will just get a severe cleaning.  The bedrooms......well, I've been saving for this, and we're gonna drop some $ on it.

On another topic, something @Gigem said is very true, I think, though I hadn't consciously thought of it before.  I think I'm stuck, mentally, at a younger age than I really am.  I know that happen to everybody to some degree, we all forget a little bit how old we are and then when we think of our real age, there's that "Wait....really?" moment.  But since I never had kids, I think it probably happens with me more than usual.  It's easy to float along, thinking you're the same person you've always been, because in many ways you are, when there's no children marking the passing of time more visibly, in a way you can't ignore.  It's easier to ignore age and think I'm the same guy I was back when I joined the board.  Then sometimes when I think about how old I actually am, it hits like a palette of bricks.  "Wait, I'm how old?"  Realizing that thinking about and planning for retirement is an imminent thing that will actually happen, as opposed to hypothetical, theoretical chatter on threads, makes me wonder where the time went.  Supposedly, people with children live fuller lives, literally.  The time feels fuller, more packed, it passes with more sense of it.  As opposed to folks without children, who have more of a "where did the time go?" feeling.  I don't think about it much, and it doesn't seem like it, but when I stop to think how close to 50 I am, I think.....that can't be right.  But it is.

I am reminded, sorry, of finally going through my son's room and trying to organize, dispose, package, store, etc.  Probably not for this thread.

It's weird for me, because it's not like I'm not used to him not being here. Because of divorce and joint custody, I experience life with three kids in the house a lot, and zero kids in the house even more.

He was with us before he went with his mom & grandparents to move in. That was Friday, and then Saturday all the way up to and through his sister's birthday dinner. He went over to his mom's that night because they had a morning flight that Sunday. I had the other two kids through Wednesday morning school dropoff, which was weird but I still don't think it "hit". And then due to week swaps, I won't get the other two back until next Friday.

So right now I really haven't had to deal with it emotionally. I know he's not here (which is normal), and I know he's at college (which is new), but I don't think it will REALLY start to hit until I have a full regular custody schedule without him here.

I did hear from my ex that his brother [the special needs one] has been waking up in the morning and asking for him. None of us were really sure how he would handle it, and those first few mornings while I had him I don't think he'd realized that things had changed yet. If he does that at my house, though, it might hit me like a ton of bricks.

Ugh, Southwest. Makes me grumpy.

The rest of the story makes me happy.
I used to rather enjoy that airline. But I moved to a region where their service/prices were not competitive. And I think they probably changed in about 1 trillion ways since then.

Heh, for sure.

Luckily College Station is only a 2-hour drive and my daughter is already planning on coming home the first weekend where there are no home football games, which is 9/26.  That would put it at exactly 5 weeks since we dropped her off, and I think I'll be able to manage that.  Maybe. :'(

We're also definitely planning on a trip to CS for a home football game, not sure which one(s)?  Between that, and Thanksgiving, I'll somehow make it to Christmas break.
Man, CS is a fun gameday.

I’m realizing your daughter will soon enough get to enjoy one of the great moments in life’s passage, the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving when everyone is back in town.

Yeah that first Thanksgiving back in town with all your friends who had gone away, but were back, was a lot of fun.  As we got older we didn't see as many of our old friends, but that first one was a blast.

She doesn't have school on Wednesday so she'll either come in Tuesday night, or leave College Station pretty early on Wednesday.  We'll have Thursday together but then she'll be headed back to College Station on Friday for the UT-A&M football game.  We're talking about going as well but man those tickets are expensive, I'll have to find a friend or family member who was willing to sell for less than market value...
