We love American and the fact that we can anywhere in the world from here (with connections, of course.

Chicago is a hub too, which is why AA is our preferred airline. That's all we ever flew (with some exceptions, of course). United is also based up there, but United sucks.

I fly Southwest a lot because, well, I live in the Southwest. It's just super convenient for the places I need to go. To/from San Jose for work, now potentially to/from Oakland for my son, and to/from Denver for my dad. 

I don't *love* that they're charging for bags now, but for short trips I can usually get by with just a carry-on. Most of the trips to places they fly are short. And I don't love some of the other recent changes they've made. 

But they're convenient in their flight options and often relatively cheap on those routes. 

When I have the option, though, I prefer American. 

I find all of the domestic airlines are pretty close to equally bad. Is Delta a little better? Yes, but they cost more. I've been on Jet Blue a bit lately, and think they do an above average job. Southwest used to be really good on cost, but it isn't anymore. I just take whatever airline hits the sweet spot of cost and schedule. Being in San Francisco, United has a hub, but I fly American, Southwest, and Delta plenty, too. We've started using Sun Country to get back and forth to Minneapolis. The pricing is a little jenky, but it's less than United or Delta (the other direct options). The scheduling is much more limited, so still happy to use United or Delta when I need a better schedule.

I find the major international carriers generally have a higher level of in-flight service, but that doesn't mean always, and better in-flight service doesn't mean better service overall. I would much rather be on British Airways, Lufthansa, or Air France than United or American (haven't flown Delta internationally), but I'm still going to pay attention to the cost. We flew New Zealand Air to get there and back, and it was much nicer than I would expect United to be--but it was still coach on a long flight.

I haven't flown in a few years, have no mileage points with any airline, don't care

flights in my opinion are not much different and mostly unpleasant so, I simply pick the least expensive option with the best schedule for me.

My daughter and I will be flying United through Chicago to Bangor, Maine this October and then home through Chicago from Providence.  She flies out of Minneapolis, I'm in Sewer City (SUX)

Luckily we will be on the same flights from Chicago and arranged seats next to each other

I have very low expectations

We do "consider" Delta, ha.  I think they have 75% of the departures here.  That was a factor in our choice of where to retire, somewhere close to a major airport.
