Im talking about twitter not sure why this confused you

when I say Musk allows how could that be the whole world
Well you could have meant it in the sense of does a free and open twitter have any effect on there world in general? (I assume people have strong feelings on Twitter for it's ability to impact more than just Twitter)

On the actual question you asked, it's an interesting question.

Assuming the standard is "legal," probably lots of porn, weird kinds of it. Other sorts of gross stuff. Legal is a pretty broad category.

There's the question of how much a user's own curation protects them from that. Maybe that solves the issue, and people who don't want to are spared some of that.

What usually happens is social networks start with the promise of being hands off, and then have to run through the various issues tied into that, as people on the internet are often gross/mean/unpleasant beyond belief. If the general tone of a hands-off social media network touch all users, a lot will leave simply because they don't feel good about it and it's not worth their time. And eventually the people running it will tighten the moderation to a point where it's a place some mass of people feel good spending time.

If they stay really hands off, Twitter likely gets more unpleasant and loses users. If not, we'll just have to see where the moderation standards land. (I know some of the alternatives that came around ran into the issue that they slanted to one side of the aisle, and because there was no good faith opposition to troll, it wasn't very fun, especially when the bad faith opposition just dropped by to troll and be annoying)

I agree, "legal" is replete with loopholes and the potential for disgusting stuff.  Any limits will be qualitative in nature, subject to judgment.

Oh, a follow up. The authenticating accounts as "human" is going to be interesting. I assume they'll still leave anonymity as an option. But I wonder to a degree.

(My account is attached to my own name, which is good because it forces me to act like an adult, though it doesn't have that effect on a great many)

But Disney could protect itself simply by not speaking or not trying to participate in the political process? Hmmm.
Or Just not take the special status that the government gave them.  It has been decided a long time ago by the courts, if you accept benefits from the government then you are governed by the rules of the government.

I use to work for a legal aid society who received the majority of their funds from the federal government, their "speech" was quite restricted if they wanted to continue to be funded.

The federal government should not fund "political" speech because then the government gets to decide what "political" speech is acceptable.  Rather no political speech if you are funded by the government or have political speech but no funds from the government.

Ahhh, so the government can also punish you for engaging in the legal/political process. Good to know.
They can only punish you if you take benefits from them.  So choose have special tax status, lose it if you use political Speech or don't take it and speak all you want.  Ask the churches and non-profits who have lost their 503(c) status for political speech.

The special status was useful in developing the infrastructure Disney needed and local governments could not provide.

I view this as a stupid move for political optics very likely not to happen at all.

Two questions:

1. what kind of speech was capped at the legal aid society?
2. How does that jive with the fact that government employees enjoy immense speech protections?

(I actually forgot about the San Antonio chick Fil A case. Which seems like it shows some level of protection. That said, I doubt it’s actionable, owing to the sort of natural gaps in our legal system,  it it should be somewhat concurring if you believe in broad based freedom of speech that’s protected from the government)

What has been happening in social networks is a tightening of speech against the right and open season for the lefties.

Dont agree that a free speech environment will run off customers but we shall see

I think youre gonna see a lot of pressure on other social networks to follow Musk's model

If they stay really hands off, Twitter likely gets more unpleasant and loses users. If not, we'll just have to see where the moderation standards land. I was referring to the pair of conservative-founded, free speech-promising would-be twitter competitors that have both struggled mightily and fallen into pretty traditional moderation.

If Musk's approach changes the paradigm, that'll certianly be something.

Yeah, unfortunately, read the comments section of any news article, hidden and you would be shocked at what people will put their name on
