I glanced at some property in eastern CA on the slopes of the Sierra, about two hours from SF once.   You can get a nice place for not TOO much, at least 20 years ago.  The state income tax rates are seriously high even for moderate income folks.

The truly wealthy can easily manage to have little or no taxable income.

The best part about living in an RV is that the cops can search your whole house every time you get pulled over for a minor traffic violation.

been to Florida four times

too wet and humid there, too many hurricanes, too many insects and reptiles

too many east coast retirees

Texas is way better
Not on the Gulf side.

The Wife & I came real close to buying something like this last year.  Kind of regret not buying it.  Plenty big enough for the two of us.  The debate has been retire and become snow birds.  House here and house in New England area or House and an RV or just as house and do the normal travel thing. Since my wife won't let me retire yet, I am in a current paralysis by analysis on what is the best decision.
Economics won't let me retire yet.

Looking forward to the day when it's my wife's decision ;-)

If you like the area north of San Fran, and you mean WAY north of San Fran, it's not nearly as expensive as you'd think for CA...

Center your search say somewhere around Eureka if you want coastal forest, or around Mt Shasta if you want mountain, and you can find stuff.

As long as you don't need to be somewhere where you can have a job, there are a lot of places in CA that are less expensive.

this would be fine, but I'd cringe at the taxes and cost of living

Well, the bulk of taxes are on income.

Depending on how your retirement is structured, you may be able to keep those relatively low.

Property tax in CA is surprisingly not that high. It's killer in places like where I live because the property values are so high, so a low percentage is still a ton of money. But up there it won't be that bad.

Sales tax can be an issue. It doesn't apply to food, though, which helps. Up there, you might be close enough to Oregon to make it worth going over the border for large purchases to avoid it.

So yeah, it'll be more expensive than some other places... But that area of the country is amazingly beautiful, the weather is great, and you're basically on the ocean. So you're getting something for that money.

For extra fun, try driving one across the Canadian Border.

They'll give your RV a full rectal examination. We're talking X-Rays, and everything.

Like the east end of San Bernardino County?

I mused about moving to Florida in an apt for a year, moving all my IRA to cash paying the tax, and then moving to CA.

If you want to live in hell's waiting room, might as well just go to Arizona or Nevada instead. Lower taxes.

The reason people don't live in Eureka is because there aren't enough jobs. The reason people don't live in the east end of SBC is because it sucks.
