Before I met my wife, I had a thought after retirement of uprooting and living in a smaller camper van and traveling the continent in it with no permanent home for a while.

I still sort of dream about that life style at times, but my wife's idea of camping is Hilton.

I don't really want to do it, but it sounds sort of interesting, I like seeing things.

I've thought about a small motorhome to drive across the country from golf course to golf course

north in the summer and south in the winter

Our plan for when the kids graduate, is to buy a large Class A motorcoach, and live mostly on the road, touring the country.  Nothing too fancy, maybe something like this:

but, it's just me - no wife

I just need a good hot shower in the morning

Yeah ours would have to be large.  I mean, I get along well with the i s c & a aggie wife,  but still, we're gonna need some space.

Also, if you get a Class C and don't tow an extra vehicle, that means you have to break camp every single time you want to go somewhere.  As a seasoned RV camper, I can assure you, that's no fun.  I'd definitely plan on having both a motorcoach and a small toad.  Or maybe a motorcycle since it's just for one.

Of course, in my dreams, I'd get something like this-- a vintage restored Vistaliner or Bluebird bus.   But in reality, I know all too well how flaky and unreliable vintage RVs can be, plus there are no slides on these things so they actually end up quite cramped despite their length.  Been there, done that, but it's fun to dream:

I don't see breaking camp to be an issue.  I don't want to play the same golf course all week or even all weekend.

I'd probably be moving every morning

If you say so.  Every time you break camp, you not only have to pack everything up, you also have to disconnect city water, electricity, and sewer hose-- the dreaded "stinky slinky."

yup, very familiar with the stinky slinky

my father had a 5th-wheel camper - I got all the stinky duties

I'm torn on the RV thing... Seems that in order to make it anywhere near worthwhile, you need to use it ALL the time... Much like a boat. If you're using an RV once a month or less, it's not very economical.

If you're looking at $400K RVs, how many plane tickets and hotel rooms does it take to equal that? And as great as an RV is, it's not getting you to Europe...

But at the same time, if I want to travel the country *and* have dogs, flying and hotels is a heck of a lot harder than an RV. At least with an RV you can take the dogs.

Well there's a bit of difference in the economics between selling your home and using your RV as a sole residence (as i plan to do someday with that $400K RV), or just having an RV as a luxury vehicle (which is what I currently do).

In the second case, the economics really don't justify it.  But economic sense is not really the point of luxury vehicles.  Much like our boat, our RV enables us to experience things that we couldn't otherwise do.  All of the state parks, national parks, and various other places we've explored, would not be accessible without the RV.  Sure you can buy day passes to some of those places, but it's not at all the same experience as spending all day and all night there, for a week or more.

So you can't really think of it as an economic investment, but rather as purchasing experiences.  Same as any other vacation.

Also, I've rented RVs and when you factor in all costs, if I use my RV for four long weekends in a year, I come out ahead.  In reality I use it a lot more than that.
