I wouldn't say California is dying. HP, Oracle, and Tesla will still retain major operations in the Bay Area, because that's where TONS of good employees are. They're moving HQ. 

California may lose some prominence, but people still want to live here. People put up with the negatives (cost of living and taxes) in exchange for the weather, the beaches, the scenery, and the cultural variety offered by the state, etc. 

What I think we're seeing, particularly with the Silicon Valley set, is that companies are trying to diversify. Heck, one of the reasons for that is that the employment market for tech workers in the Bay Area is TOO competitive--it's hard to retain employees when literally every corner houses another potential employer for them. 

Not everyone wants the Bay Area lifestyle, so they can get employees who are perhaps a little more stable and less likely to jump jobs on a whim in Austin or Houston.

No, Speechnow got rid of spending limits. The Super PAC thing is from Speechnow, although a lot of people believe it was due to Citizens United because they occurred at the same time and everyone complains about Citizens United.

All Citizens United did was ensure corporations to have the same speech rights that the individuals who comprise that corporation have. Another misconception is that it said corporations were people--whereas corporate "personhood" is a completely different and much longer-standing idea. 

Citizens United said that individuals have the right to political speech, and when those individuals come together in a corporate form, they don't forfeit that right. 

But it was SpeechNow that said that individuals cannot be limited in their donations to political organizations that operate and advocate outside of direct coordination with candidates. 

Two different things. What you're accusing Citizens United of was done by SpeechNow.

No problem!

I did some research back in the day when everyone was up in arms over Citizens United... I did something rash, and ya know, actually read the majority opinion. Nothing I read had anything to do with the criticisms of the ruling, so I knew I had to dig deeper. 

I think Citizens United gets all the attention because of the facts of the case, and who the intended target was of the movie that Citizens United was trying to air. When--in close temporal proximity--SuperPACs became a thing, people just naturally conflated the two.

So, not that Ca is a paradise, but all these things basically come down to A. It's temperate B. It's expensive. 

The homelessness is exacerbated by several factors, but a big one is that just about all year in both massive metro areas, you won't die sleeping outside. And that's actually kinda rare. 

And people tend to "consider" leaving places that are expensive. I live in a town I like very much and I've been considering leaving for about half the time I lived here (and will leave very soon).

The part about considering leaving if they could work from home, I bet they would. Jobs pay more there. And if I could keep a salary from a high-priced part of the world and live somewhere I could buy a house, I'd consider the hell out of that.

(That or they're getting priced out, like in Austin)

Man, irritated.

Ordered an electric fireplace for the bedroom. It took a couple weeks to arrive. I scoped out the spot on the wall, and was getting ready to install it when I noticed the plug, which is...not for American outlets.

It shipped from California to Ohio, so not sure how I got a European version, but there we are. Probably why California is dying.
