Apple CEO Tim Cook went on the offensive against Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook. Cook's speech seems to be a direct response to Facebook's recent attack on Apple, in which the world's largest social network took out full-page ads in several newspapers attacking Apple's new privacy changes.

But what's most fascinating is that Cook took direct aim at Facebook without ever mentioning the company by name.

Just check out the following excerpt:

"Technology does not need vast troves of personal data stitched together across dozens of websites and apps in order to succeed. Advertising existed and thrived for decades without it, and we're here today because the path of least resistance is rarely the path of wisdom.

"If a business is built on misleading users on data exploitation, on choices that are no choices at all, then it does not deserve our praise. It deserves reform.

"We should not look away from the bigger picture. In a moment of rampant disinformation and conspiracy theories juiced by algorithms, we can no longer turn a blind eye to a theory of technology that says all engagement is good engagement, the longer the better, and all with the goal of collecting as much data as possible.

"Too many are still asking the question "How much can we get away with?" when they need to be asking "What are the consequences?

"What are the consequences of prioritizing conspiracy theories and violent incitement simply because of the high rates of engagement?

"What are the consequences of not just tolerating but rewarding content that undermines public trust in life-saving vaccinations?

Hmmm, this would not sit well with the outlook some folks here seem to have. Interesting.

It is many things. Possibly not good business. Alienating to many folks. An interesting step on the shifting tides of brand neutrality.

But it ain't a violation of the first amendment. Perhaps it's against a sort of broad spirit of the most cited part of the amendment, but censoring people on a private platform is not a constitutional violation. It simply isn't.

I have no problem with across the board censorship applied fairly to everyone but that is not the game they are playing

these chat services have become so big that they could be considered a utility like the phone company

the more they do this crap the closer they come to being regulated

I really dont understand why they are poking the bear

Google/FB/Twitter are the internet today. They are the public square. They have grown so pervasive and become so ingrained into the fabric of society and grown way beyond the “oh they’re private companies that can just do whatever they want” argument- that they need to be treated like public utilities. And in all cases 1st amendment rights ought to apply.

You can think whatever you want of Donald Trump- but the fact that a bunch of unelected oligarchs in Silicon Valley could effectively just erase a President of the f**king United State from the Internet- is god damn FRIGHTENING. If they can do that to that guy- that can do that to anyone and for any reason.

I am 100000% against censorship in any form or fashion. People have the right to say whatever the hell they want. The idea that people out there actually believe that everyone has the right to never be offended is absolute lunacy.

Tim Cook is a faggot. And I literally do not mean that in the homosexual derogatory way- I could give a shit less what he’s into or his sexual orientation.

I mean it in the grade school talking bullshit with your friends way when one friend was being a little whiny bitch over nothing and one of your other friends would say to the whiner- quit being a faggot dude.

I think there are some restrictions on Free Speech that are needed, a few are obvious, and then the line gets grey.

The only restrictions on free speech imo- obviously direct threats of violence or harm on someone- or direct calls to go harm someone or break the law- maybe hate speech to a degree- but aside from that everything is wide open. Freedom of speech is a damn good thing.
