Just bought a 32 inch monitor, and discovered it has only HDMI connections.  My old desktop has only VGA output, so I hope I bought the correct adaptor.

We'll see.
When it catches fire, have the extinguisher on hand.

I can pick up a new computer fairly cheaply, this Dell has lasted a lot longer than most did back in the day.

my old Dell desktop at home has some age, but the most stressful thing I put it through is logging into this forum

In any event, delivery services are certainly growing and the pandemic has really rearranged life that some ways will not go back to normal.  While we are saying how things ought to be, I'd like to see governments really loosen up liquor laws.  Shopping centers should be an all in one type place - grab a bite to eat, grab a drink, peruse the stores while walking around with your margarita slurpee.  Getting people to leave the house consistently is getting more difficult, and the excessive regulation only drives down options.

I wonder about all the new office space going up around me.

Midtown development pipeline includes 26 major projects right now (curbed.com)

So, what will be different when things return to "normal"?

Work from home - Does anyone think this won't remain very common?  Maybe it's 1-2 days a week, maybe it's everything.

Delivery services - Grocery stores, restaurants, Amazon of course is gorging on this.

Loss of independent eateries - I imagine the chains will survive, fast food might stay more prominent

Movie going - I was oogling an  80" OLED TV today at Costco.  Do I need a movie theater?

Travel - might return to near normal?

Virtual doctor visits

The optimist in me hopes this mRNA vaccine tech becomes widely useful for antivirals.  Even if you get COVID after the vaccine, it is almost certain to be mild.

What other changes have you seen?

I was thinking about the theaters the other day

not sure they will return
They won't let me give blood anymore. The burnt orange color scares the hell out of the doctors.

I still love going to see the big blockbusters at the movie theater.  Star Wars, Avengers, those kinds of movies.  In a normal year we hit the theater 3-4x.

But I don't know if there are enough people like me, or if my habits are enough, to sustain movie theaters.

  • Absolutely think this will stay. Some of the execs upchain of me prior to this didn't like WFH--preferred to have their employees in the office. This has ABSOLUTELY changed their mind. While there is some advantage to the office, the belief that productivity would fall off a cliff with WFH wasn't true.
  • I think to some extent all of this (except Amazon) will fade. Sometimes with grocery, you actually want to SEE your produce before you buy, and not have some person you don't know substituting some food you didn't want because what you wanted was out of stock. For restaurant delivery, I think people will realize that they're spending WAY more for delivery services than carry-out or dine-in and that one might fade as well. For goods? Yeah, I think everyone has been pushed into free shipping and I definitely think "buy on line / pick up curbside or in store" will completely increase.
  • Tough to say. I think independent eateries will recover, as it's a common small business formation. Even if some are decimated by the pandemic, I think they'll be replaced over time.
  • I think this, along with sporting events, is already happening. However, at the same time I think movies--for the demographic that MOST funds the theaters--is a social event. Old curmudgeons like us would rather sit in our own house and may not really care if we see a move on opening weekend or 6 months later. For the teens/twenties crowd, who may not be able to afford an 80" TV or the living room and surround sound setup to hold it, I think it'll come right back.
  • Travel is going to be PACKED and EXPENSIVE starting the 2nd half of this year and through 2022, IMHO. I'm flat out itching to go somewhere, and I think a LOT of other people are too.
  • Totally think this will continue. For routine stuff, why bother taking 2-3 hours out of your day for a 30 minute or 1 hour appointment, when you can just do it virtually...

BTW I totally think that you guys should all be looking into refreshing your PCs, laptops, etc...

In fact, don't get off Facebook / Twitter / Youtube / etc. Start posting HUGE videos and pictures and other stuff. Need to fill some hard drives.
