Unfortunately, I just can't ignore its $209,250 base price

2026 Mercedes-AMG SL63 S E Performance Test: Sound and Fury

Even ignoring its $209,250 base price, the SL63 S E Performance is a truly extreme machine. Under the SL's long hood lies a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 producing 603 horsepower and 627 pound-feet. Add to that a 201-hp, 236-lb-ft electric motor and a battery with 5 kWh of usable energy, and you get a stonkin' 805 horsepower and 1047 pound-feet of twist, which is fed to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission.
Dream car.

Today is National Corvette Day and Chevrolet choose today to reveal the 2027 Corvette Stingray’s newest feature: a 200+ MPH Top Speed!

Chevrolet just made it a whole lot easier (and cheaper) to go 200+ MPH, and they did it with the base 2027 Corvette Stingray that has a starting MSRP of $73,495. Chevy says at that price point, the ’27 Stingray is the “most-attainable 200-mph capable vehicle currently on sale.”

Chevrolet attained the top speed with a non-Z51 Corvette Stingray as the base car in the C8 lineup features a unique mix of high power and low drag. A Stingray with the Z51 Performance Package adds more downforce which keeps it from surpassing the double century mark. Previously, the Stingray’s top speed would top out at 194 MPH.

But that’s not all they have chosen to reveal on this special day.

The new performance figures featuring the 2027 Corvette Stingray shows that it’s capable of a 2.8-second 0-60 MPH time, and it can run the quarter mile in 11.0-seconds at 124 mph.

In an interview with GM News, small block assistant chief engineer Mike Kociba explained that the bump in power provided by the new LS6 6.7L V8 proved critical to the 2027 Corvette Stingray edging past 200:

The latest gen of Corvette is a modern marvel.  I don't think most people realize it.  To have that performance at that price is absurd.  It makes all other supercars seem stupid to own.
I have trouble naming one other product that is so much cheaper than its competitors for equal-or-better performance.  In any industry.  It's a genuine marvel.

A question I have had about hybrids is why they don't just use the electric motor as primary propulsion and the gas (Diesel) engine purely to recharge.  This would do away with a transmission (potentially, you could use a two speed variant), the alternator, and provide the "instant" torque of the electric motor.  The gas engine could be designed to run at some narrow RPM range for efficiency just to drive a generator.

You could have electric motors on each wheel if one wanted AWD and traction control.

I was musing about the Mercedes above vs a Corvette Stingray convertible (which in 3LT form would push $100 K)...  The Vette would be better on a track if driven competently, the Mercedes likely would offer nicer interior materials and accomodations.  Either would accelerate about as fast as most of us would want.  The Mercedes might drink more fuel, to the extent that is any concern.

On a longish trip on a freeway, the Merc would be the clear choice if fuel is not a concern.  Probably nobody cross shops the two.

I just googled it... Those are known as "series hybrids" BTW.

It seems that the main culprit is conversion losses. At highway speed, using the gasoline engine to power the wheels directly is apparently more efficient than using the gasoline engine to create electricity which is then used to power an electric motor which powers the wheels.

For long sustained drives, the gas engine would be running constantly. If it's not running constantly, it's overpowered for the application and therefore too costly. And if it's underpowered, you'll run out of range or limit your speed because you can't generate enough electricity to both drive the wheels and keep the battery charged long-term. But if the gas engine is running constantly, then there's no advantage of being a hybrid at all, and there's disadvantage from the conversion losses.

And then this also means that the electric motor has to be big and powerful enough to handle all driving duties under all conditions. Which is more powerful than it would be in a parallel hybrid. Which means more cost.

In a parallel hybrid, you have an gas engine that's appropriately sized to operate the car at highway speeds. You have electric motors that make added power for around-town driving, but the gas engine doesn't even necessarily need to spend it's time and power "charging" the batteries all that much b/c you can rely on things like regen braking to provide some of the charge--which makes sense around-town and is irrelevant on the highway.

Just my $0.02.

M-B cars generally get pretty good MPG.

I'm happily surprised at the mileage my stingray gets - 26 overall the past 7500 miles - only one long road trip to KEarney, NE and back around 275 miles one-way

a little better than EPA-estimated 19 mpg combined (16 mpg city / 25 mpg highway).
