The latest gen of Corvette is a modern marvel.  I don't think most people realize it.  To have that performance at that price is absurd.  It makes all other supercars seem stupid to own.  
I have trouble naming one other product that is so much cheaper than its competitors for equal-or-better performance.  In any industry.  It's a genuine marvel.

A question I have had about hybrids is why they don't just use the electric motor as primary propulsion and the gas (Diesel) engine purely to recharge.  This would do away with a transmission (potentially, you could use a two speed variant), the alternator, and provide the "instant" torque of the electric motor.  The gas engine could be designed to run at some narrow RPM range for efficiency just to drive a generator.

You could have electric motors on each wheel if one wanted AWD and traction control.

I was musing about the Mercedes above vs a Corvette Stingray convertible (which in 3LT form would push $100 K)...  The Vette would be better on a track if driven competently, the Mercedes likely would offer nicer interior materials and accomodations.  Either would accelerate about as fast as most of us would want.  The Mercedes might drink more fuel, to the extent that is any concern.

On a longish trip on a freeway, the Merc would be the clear choice if fuel is not a concern.  Probably nobody cross shops the two.
