Re no. 5: when I was a kid, I had a "rich" friend whose parents took him to that establishment. It sounded so cool. My parents never took me there, so I figured we were too poor for it. Not so much--our local athletics and toys store was probably more expensive. Unless maybe it was for the sheer gimme factor--the indulgence--of being in a giant store focused almost entirely on toys.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:
Hermine Braunsteiner Becomes First Nazi Extradited from the US (1973)
Nicknamed the "Stomping Mare" for her violent kicking of prisoners, Braunsteiner was a Nazi concentration camp guard during WWII. After the war, she spent a brief period in jail for war crimes before marrying an American and becoming a US citizen. In 1964, she was confronted at her home in New York by a reporter tipped off about her past by Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal. When her role in the war came to light, she was stripped of her citizenship and extradited to West Germany.

Weird history was made today.

Missouri was given a piece of the 1960 national championship by the US senate.  What in the actual fuck?!?

The story of the '60 Tigers is one you may have heard of.  Their only loss was 23-7 to rival KU, who allegedly played an ineligible player.  The conference ruled it a KU forfeit in December of that year and sent Mizzou to the Orange Bowl instead of the Jayhawks.

#5 Mizzou won the OB over #4 Navy 21-14 to finish 10-1, officially.  The NCAA didn't change anything and Mizzou finished #5 in the AP poll (before the bowls).
Now, in 2026, the government is now crowning them champs.

This is the year 2-loss Minnesota won the NC (but 1 loss was in the bowl, after the final poll) and undefeated-with-a-tie Ole Miss was kind of screwed out of a NC.  Also Iowa made it 3 teams with between 12-17 first-place votes (even though Iowa lost to Minnesota h2h).  The Gophers lost 2 of their last 3 games, but only 2 of them counted in the poll.

So it's already a mess, and Mizzou is just conjuring a new NC for themselves.

To be fair, it's not nearly as absurd as Alabama trying to claim 1941, where the finished 20th in the AP poll.
It's all so stupid.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:
The Great Train Robbery (1963)
On the night of August 7, 1963, a postal train left Glasgow with a High Value Package (HVP) coach containing registered mail and a large sum of money. Before dawn the next morning, the driver sighted a red signal and, not knowing that the light had been tampered with, brought the train to a halt as was protocol. Fifteen robbers descended on the train, attacking the train's operators, restraining the postal workers in the HVP coach, and making off with £2.6 million.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:
Nathan Ames Patents His "Revolving Stairs," Now Known as the Escalator (1859)
Although no working model of his design was ever built, Ames is credited with patenting the first escalator. His idea for the "revolving stairs" was largely speculative. It was not until the 1890s that the first working escalator—called the "inclined elevator"—was produced, based on another's designs. It was installed among the amusements at New York's Coney Island but did not remain a novelty for long.

In 897 CE, Rome witnessed one of the strangest and darkest episodes in medieval history—the infamous Cadaver Synod.
Months after the death of Pope Formosus, his body was exhumed from its tomb and brought before a church council. The corpse was dressed in papal robes, placed upon a throne, and subjected to accusations as if the dead pope were still alive. A deacon was reportedly appointed to speak on behalf of the deceased.

The charges were deeply connected to the political battles that had consumed Rome. Formosus had been involved in bitter struggles among powerful factions, and his election and actions as pope became targets after his death. The bizarre trial ultimately declared him guilty, and his papal acts were annulled.

But the story became even darker. His corpse was stripped of its papal clothing, and his remains were eventually thrown into the Tiber River.
The Cadaver Synod revealed just how dangerous the struggle for power within medieval Rome could become. It was not simply a trial of a dead pope—it was a dramatic display of revenge, politics, and religious authority.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:
European Heat Wave: UK's Hottest Day on Record (2003)
The European heat wave of 2003 resulted in the deaths of more than 40,000 people. In France, where summers are usually very mild and many homes do not have air conditioning, nearly 15,000 people died from heat-related issues—at a time when many physicians were on summer holiday. So many died that undertakers ran out of room in their own facilities and had to keep corpses in off-site warehouses.
