Especially considering that the British intentionally abandoned the rhotic accent in direct response to wishing to separate themselves from the "gauche" colonists.  Apparently "the King's English" wasn't even a thing until after we won the War of Tea. 

It's two different British accents, but it's almost like the more common tongue took all those r's the aristocrats didn't use anymore and tacked them on to the end of words like "idea."
