Only regret I have is I didn't go to Mt Etna.
Well if you do ever go don't watch a Michigan game on it.You might twist off and trigger something that'd make Pompeii look like a sparkler

What about Mayochup?  Or Tartarchup?  Great with fried catfish!

Some advice for visiting Paris (or any European city really):

1.  Try not to look like an obvious American - no white socks, no T-shirt with whatever printed on it, no short pants, no big honking camera around your neck (if possible), no tennis shoes, no ball cap (they call it a casket).  You still will, but will be less obvious.
2.  Carry a thin wallet with minimal money and one credit card in your front pocket, and if you want a fake wallet in your back.  Have a few euros in your other front pocket loose for "incidentals".  Don't pull your wallet out and leave it on a table at a restaurant.  Don't let anyone take your credit card back somewhere, they will bring the charge gadget to your table.
3.  If anyone stops you in the street, keep walking, they are distracting you while someone else steals your wallet.  This will happen often, sometimes young girls asking if you speak English or lost this ring, whatever, keep walking.  Parisians do not talk to strangers.
4.  The Montmarte area is touristy and also pretty rife with crime and begging.  Don't give money to beggars.
5.  The buses work pretty well, you can buy tickets at any Tabac store.  The subway works but is a bit dirty.
6.  CDG airport is a mess.  Allow a lot of time in summer to get through it.  We almost missed a flight once and were 3 hours ahead of departure.  In July and August, it is a sea of people and no lines you can find, just a mess.  It can take a while to find which carousel has your luggage also.  Ugh, it's a mess, I've never seen a worse airport layout.
7.  If you rent a car, don't rent from Hertz.  They will ding you for tiny dings.  I've stood and waited on the wife several times and seen this play out with Americans.  I rent from Enterprise now and they are fine.  She rented from Hertz for her work, and always had insurance, and often needed it.  They still hassled her about whatever.  And be prepared in Paris for not being able to park anywhere.
8.  Air France runs a bus from CDG into town which I recommend.  It's called "Le Car" oddly enough.  It used to be about 16 euros.  It has 3-4 stops, one of which is near L'Etoile, which is near where we were staying at the time.

The Musee d'Orsay is a really nice art museum in my opinion.  The Louvre is simply too large and everyone flocks to the famous paintings and ignores the rest.  I guess the reason I'm disenchanted with Paris is that I've seen all I want to see there, and more, and prefer seeing somewhere new.  And I hate the airport, but that's about the only way to get there unless you fly to London and take the train, which is rather interesting.

CDG is a mess, aptly named I think.

1-4 seem to apply in any large-ish European city. It is what it is.

Definitely no shorts, and if you have to wear "gym" shoes (my feet beg for it when walking long distances), get something like the Rockport variety - more to the "dressy" side.

We did not do rental cars. Public transit is the way to do it, in my opinion. We also hired a few drivers - remarkably cheap for remarkable tours. Those guys know where to go and how to get there. One guy was fantastic. Found him at a cab stand in Siena and asked how much for a tour of the area - not IN Siena but around it. The guy took us around the Tuscan hillsides and stopped at various wineries for tours/tastings. By the time we were done, after about 3 hours, he charged us 50 Euro. Dropped us off at the train in Siena so we could get back to Florence. It was fantastic.

Not sure this kind of thing would happen in France though. The Italians like us and they want us there. They love practicing English too, and also love helping us speak Italian. It was pretty cool.

I've seen ads in Paris for a day rental of a driver in a Mercedes for circa 350 Euros.  Never done it.  We usually have a car because we're staying outside Paris but are visiting cousins and whatnot.  I don't recommend a rental car unless you're leaving Paris.

I love Florence.

Paris is fine, I prefer to get out to the provinces.  Aix en Provence might be my favorite place on Earth.

Except for Tuscany and the Italian Riviera, I love those places too.

Paris sounds like rubbish to me.  No shorts?  Why?  I only wear pants as part of my work costume.

Of course, you can wear whatever you want.  But if you prefer to "blend in" I suggest long pants, slacks, not jeans.
I find it better in Paris to blend in.  Others may choose differently.
They will have those 16 year old gypsy girls coming up to them and asking if they speak English a lot.

I have no desire or reason to visit Paris or other cities like it that are unfriendly to me.

I understand the "when in Rome" idea of blending in, but if I'm going to be harassed and in danger of being robbed I will pick another destination to spend my time and money

My wife spent weeks stressing herself about the shoes needed to "fit in" in Europe. They say that women don't wear sneakers. But we knew we were going to be doing a lot of walking, so she needed something.

Turns out it's really not as big of a deal as they make it out to be. The big thing was that you shouldn't look like you're wearing "workout shoes", but nice sneakers is just fine. We saw local women wearing them all over the place...
