I've eaten in Chinese restaurants where we were the only nonAsians dining there.  They had two menus, one for "us" and one for the Chinese/Asians.  They had different selections.  My only complaint was that the shrimp were shell on, pepper shrimp.

I'm not too crazy about chitin in my diet.

My Dad would only eat "American food", so that's all we had, until I got out of the house.

We're very lucky to have such a profusion of styles.

It's interesting though that American French restaurants are almost always on the expensive side.  They needn't be, but are.  We associate French "cuisine" (which means kitchen) with pricey food.

Most probably wouldn't really want Chinese food. I've not been but I've heard stories from friends who have. Doesn't sound good at all.
You're a foodie, Badge... I'll bet you'd be into it.

I don't think so. My SIL is Chinese and even she can't stand it. She was just over there too. Plus, you can't breathe there, so... Nah.

Yeah, over there there are a lot of dishes that are shell-on, head-on. Fried at high heat in the wok so the shell is ultra-crispy, and then doused in salt and white pepper... Delicious!
Oddly enough, I had gone to China and was telling one of my good friends [who is half-Filipino and eats his grandmother's traditional Filipino fare] about eating the shrimp with the head/shell on. He looked at me like I was crazy.
Fast forward a year to when I was in Taiwan at a restaurant with coworkers, and a similar dish came out. I was eating it head-on with the native Taiwanese, and there was one guy in our group who was peeling and eating his shrimp. He was Filipino...
Just different customs...

I'll pass on the chitin.

Roach carapaces are also made of chitin.  It's a fascinating material, similar to cellulose, but very different in properties of course.

Not good fer eatin, just good fer lookin' through.

Absolutely love Florence.
Have yet to go. I've been to Italy twice and Sicily once. Went to Rome, Venice, Naples, and Milan in the mainland. And when I went to Sicily I went for 10 days and rented a car and drove around a lot of the island. Absolutely unreal. Nothing quite like Sicily. Probably the best food I've ever had in my life. Only regret I have is I didn't go to Mt Etna.

We're going to do Sicily as part of a cruise, but stay there for a week too. I need to find my grandpa's house, near Palermo.

Obviously I don't have much to say. I've been to downtown Paris for ~3 days this spring, and to Versailles for <48 hours for work in 2006. So I can't say I ventured beyond a tourist area. It was pretty much all tourist areas lol...
But as others brought up, basically everywhere we ate in Rome, Cinque Terre [touristy vacation spot] and Florence was amazing. The only bad things I can recall were the pizza at the Vatican cafeteria, and one sidewalk spot in Florence that was merely so-so.
Whereas nothing we had in Paris was really very impressive.
I've been to France 6 times and Paris 5 times and the first two times I was in Paris I kept being disappointed in the food. I hadn't done any research online or in travel mags for restaurants. I did the last 3 times I went back, and I had some amazing food. You have to know where to go in Paris to eat a great meal. It's just such a big city and such a big tourist trap that unfortunately the terrible restaurants outweigh the good ones.
Next time you go back, use TripAdvisor or Google reviews and you'll be OK.
Italy though- like everyone said- you can walk in just about any spot and have a really good meal. And usually for a lot less money than you can in France.

The more legit the Chinese joint, the less I like it.
My tongue is 'Muricanized in that regard.

if you're there for a week you should definitely rent a car.
Such a small island that you can travel to almost any city within 4 hrs. Flew into Catania, rented a car and was basically on the go non-stop for 10 days and flew back from Palermo.
Went to Catania, Taormina & Castelmola, Syracuse, Agrigento, Porto Palo, and Palermo. The fish market in Syracuse is insane. All kinds of fish everywhere that were just caught that morning. Raw fish everyone and not a hint of that nasty fish smell.
There's this little hotel/restaurant right on the beach in Porto Palo called Da Vittorio. Probably the best seafood pasta dish I've ever had in my life. And the lobster was amazing.

I couldn't believe the food you could get for so little money there. Hell, even if you sit down at an outdoor joint for a glass of wine they GIVE you half of a meal with cheese, olives, breads, sausage, etc. It's amazing.

I tell folks Paris is my least favorite city in France, and they guffaw and gush about how they LOVED it.

I think my "sense of humor" is something a lot of folks miss.  Oddly enough.

The wife laughs, she grew up in Paris and knows what I mean.  Most Americans get to go to France once in their life, perhaps, and it will be Paris, and they miss out on the rest of the country.  It's akin to visiting the States and spending 3 days in NYC and one day in DC.

Almost.  France of course is smaller.

Bayeux was a nice place to visit I thought.
Paris is my favorite city, period. Nothing quite like it anywhere. I could actually live there. I think.
Have you ever been to Annecy in the French Alps? Probably the most beautiful, picturesque place I've ever witnessed in person. We rented a boat and went all over the lake for basically the entire day. Unbelievably gorgeous.
