Fewer than half of Americans have a passport. I can't remember the last time I saw someone carrying a birth certificate. I haven't received a new social security card in probably 30 years.

Simply put: the overwhelming majority of people do not carry proof of citizenship, and I would bet that in the range of 50% of citizens couldn't easily start carrying it.
hah, fewer than a quarter of folks living in America would have to worry about it
probably fewer than 10% of those would ever be asked about citizenship

it's a very small minority that would be the target of a deportation plan
Keep your nose clean and go about your business
if you are a citizen and are worried about being profiled and deported,......... I'd carry some paperwork

I think the high score is 432K deported by the Obama administration in 2013.  I think Trump will surpass that yearly number by quite a bit but 10 million over 4 years is hard to imagine.
yeah I think Obama hit around 3 million deported. US world record holder. The Deporter in chief.

not sure Trump is going to significantly beat that- if he does it'll probably be marginally.

My birth certificate could be easily faked.  An SS card is "not meant to be used for identification".  I have a passport, I keep it pretty close, locked up, usually.

So, LEOs stop "Juan" at Home Depot and ask him his status?  Proof of something?  I believe green card holders are supposed to have it with them, but few do.  No habla.

There will be some major public outcries, fanned by the media, and court cases.

Some of the "deported" numbers are people at the border turned away.

Several pages back I noted that American citizens have already been deported by ICE. So my question is--along the lines of the death penalty--how many citizens deported is acceptable? How many documented immigrants is acceptable?

In the case of the death penalty, the current thinking is approximately 4% of death row convicts are innocent, so roughly one in twenty. The majority of Americans in 27 states appear to believe that is an acceptable error rate for killing people, as long as we can execute the other 19 within about 20 years or so of the crimes that they commit.

So what is the acceptable error rate for deportating citizens and people here with up to date documentation?

Some other problematic questions: is deportation the correct remedy for someone whose visa is expired? How expired? What if it's bureaucratic problems that caused the delay? How do we appropriately treat asylum seekers, while weeding out the fakers? What about american citizens who have a family member here who is undocumented? Do we deport someone who is married to an American citizen? What about someone whose child is an American citizen? What about the "dreamers?" Children (or now young adults) who have spent most of their lives here and have no support in the country their parents brought them here from--may not even speak that country's language?
There is a lot to unpack here.

I think deportation needs to be limited to those who commit crimes, other than crossing the border illegally. Those who crossed illegally after January 2021 almost kind of crossed legally as they were enabled and encouraged to do so by the current administration. That makes it tough to grasp in my head.

To those who crossed, they didn't do anything wrong in their minds. To those who came here with good intentions, I'm OK with allowing them to stay.

So, find the bad guys and deport them. It won't be easy, but it needs to happen.

There are also many new steps that need to be taken.

The "sanctuary" city/state concept is terrible and needs to go away. They are "sanctuary" until they run out of resources and beg the feds to stop Texas from sending illegals to their "sanctuary" city. Those resources are being stolen from the poor people who really need them - and they are not happy. I've seen them on TV, inside City Council chambers, furious with their leaders.

Congress needs to address many issues and immigration reform is one of them. They can start with DACA and go from there.

Uncooperative "sanctuaries" do not help solve this problem at all.

Because a quarter of folks in the country are immigrants?

Juan might be detained and asked for proof of something
after a few of these occurrences and being blown up in the media, Juan will find and carry his green card

not sure how you can just deport 20-30 million illegals. logistics of that are incomprehensible. it's not realistically possible. any illegal arrested for a crime should be auto-deported- but for some dumbass reason often times they are just let go.

better idea imo would be to try your best to stop the flow of illegal immigration/border crossings. maybe shut down the empire a little bit and bring troops home from one of the nearly 900 bases we have across the globe and start building outposts and fortifications on the southern border and station military personnel there. invest whatever billions it cost to build massive 30+ foot walls and electrical fences- station sniper shooters in towers every x distance, patrol the area with thousands of armed reaper drones- shoot to kill anyone who tries to illegally cross the border. you do all that border crossings will stop dead in their tracks.

Mexican drug cartels are also a major problem in all of this. Mexico is incapable of dealing with the cartels. US should do it for them. Time to send in the CIA hit squads, US special forces, and reaper drones and kill every single high and mid level cartel member. Hunt them down like the animals they are and wipe them from the face of the earth.
Serious question: do you think this is a reasonable proposal?

If so, do you have any idea the cost? Do you have any idea the impact on our defense readiness? Do you think soldiers will be willing to shoot people--men, women, and children--simply for crossing a line? Are you willing to impose the emotional toll of that on our soldiers? Are you aware of any democratic government that has pursued this kind of policy?

Is your proposal the same (a firing squad) for people who overstay their visas (traditionally a higher number than the people apprehended at the border)?

agreed, if you're here illegally and commit a crime, you've worn out your welcome

I don't see a mass deportation of good people that aren't causing trouble
maybe a few larger groups rounded up at meat packing plants and other high density places at first to make a statement and send a message
