There is no doubt that a lot of political campaigning has very little to do with the issues that the people spending money on the campaigning actually care about.

Medina and I, actually, more appropriately, my wife, could sit down at the table and solve a bunch of problems. They would disagree on a lot, but they would agree on more. And they would do it without yelling and screaming. This includes many of the hottest button issues. If people were interested in what they discussed, they would happily produce a transcript, or just invite people to watch. People who paid attention to how they did it and what they came up with would appreciate the well-reasoned and thoughtful approach, as well as their good faith. But most people wouldn't pay attention to it. And members of each team would would scream and yell about how they screwed it all up. They would be graded "F" by interest groups, pilloried on social media and in op-eds, and labeled as traitors to the cause because neither of them got all that they went in seeking.

Not universally--actually, there is a fair amount of that still happening, but less and less, particularly at the federal level. And the desire for--and access to--fame is making it worse, not better.

Yeah. Because CA doesn't have those :57:

This is something SFIrish knows a ton about, and has been involved in at a granular level. It's a great example of a topic people love to complain about, but rarely understand all the underlying issues that went into the decision making. :-)

What, is it a reductio to claim that quite literally the first thing people ask me when I say I'm a libertarian is "who will build and maintain the roads?!?!"

Well, it seems weird for a statist to respond with "we'll contract it out to a corporation who will pay for it and then charge you to drive on them!"

I’ve seen in-depth, non-partisan analysis of the Texas road funding. Bottom line, they haven’t raised the gas tax since the early 90’s. The states population has doubled, or more, in that timeframe. I’m the last person to advocate for more taxes, but I’m at least aware enough to know that infrastructure has to get paid.

I've told the story here but a few years ago, the state legislature voted to increase the gas tax in CA. The supposed beneficiaries of this new revenue were first responders. But as we all know, money is fungible.

There was a push to have a ballot proposition to cancel the proposed gas tax increase. The groups pushing to vote against cancelling the gas tax increase were a lot of first responder groups [obviously] and they absolutely wallpapered television here with advertisements urging people to vote against the proposition. These were emotional ads talking about how voting for the proposition would hurt first responders and lead to not being able to access needed services and [essentially] that CA would just turn into a hellhole if you vote Yes.

You know what they NEVER did in a single one of these ads that I can recall? Mention the gas tax.

And the proposition failed.

So a very unpopular gas tax increase ended up staying, because voters are stupid, who then complain about the price of gas and wonder why nobody is doing something about the price of gas.
I truly hate the descriptions of those. Just written to opaque.

More than opaque, often they're deliberately misleading.  There oughtta be a law against it! :)

Yup it'll definitely drive prices up in the short term.  Scarcity of supply and all that.

I understand.

I'm just saying it's possible to have the trifecta of high gas taxes, sh!tty roads, *and* lots of toll roads.

Texas roads are actually pretty good.  Travel on the highway east and you immediately detect a noticeable decline in road quality upon entering Louisiana.  Travel west across the New Mexico state border and you'll feel like you just drove onto a washboard.
