I've told the story before, the Marines in my son's unit did a two week training in Israel some years ago and told me the IDF tactics often were WAY outside any ROEs American forces would use.  It's a very very messy situation with no "good answer" I can imagine.  But, I think the Israeli response is basically what Hamas wanted.

Of course it is.  The creation of new terrorists is the only way organizations like Hamas can persist.  Hamas engaged in gross acts of violence in order to provoke gross acts of violence.  This war is centuries-old, not only a few decades like Hamas-apologists keep attempting to purport.

Oddly enough, there was a time when Jews fled Christian countries for Muslim countries.

I'm not sure this conflict is centuries old.  There certainly were stirrings a century ago post WW One, Balfour and all that.

Of course.
It was inevitable.
That's their plan.

Sheeesh.

What to know about ICJ’s Israel ruling and what happens next (thehill.com)

I struggle to see a reason to have an ICJ when it has zero enforcement power.  Maybe some folks use harsh language.

And then ....

It has no enforcement power on us or our allies.  I'm sure it could scare the shit out of a Uruguay or a Sri Lanka or somebody.

Why?  Would bad thing might happen to Uruguay as a result of this that wouldn't be happening anyway?

Umm

I'm not sure we can have a conversation.  We're just on different wavelengths.  We're both speaking English, but not understanding each other.

To answer your question, words, threats, mores (not that Urugruay is involved at all in "this").
I'll blame myself and move on.

I believe the concept is that those countries are signatory states to the ICJ and have agreed to abide by them, so if someone in Uruguay starts ethnic cleansing or something, the ICJ might hold them to account.

Whereas the US and Israel gave the ICJ the middle finger and didn't sign so we won't abide by any judgement they make.

How would the ICJ hold Uruguay to account?  By what mechanism?

I mean, you've cited one city as an example.  And it's a good one.  But I don't see that as a broad base of evidence to support that it's going to happen every time.

I'm interested to see what happens in places like Chicago, Portland, Seattle, and San Francisco.  Are they going to reverse their leftist policies and get crime under control, in the same way NYC has in the past?
I think it is a matter of degree and obviously some people will tolerate a higher level of crime than others.

One of the big problems is that the crime chases out the people who refuse to tolerate it.  You as an individual leaving Austin doesn't really have a material impact but if a few thousand Austin residents leave due to crime those tend to come from the more rational side of the ledger so the politics of the remaining residents are even more wacko than they were before.

not too dissimilar to the beginning of the end of the apartheid regime of South Africa. which by the way- Israel supported the apartheid regime in South Africa- even offered to sell them nuclear weapons. swell bunch of people.
To be fair to the Israelis, I'm pretty sure that they got their Uranium from S. Africa.  My understanding was that S. Africa had the raw materials and Israel had the scientific and industrial capacity so they helped each other out.

Here’s what’s in the mammoth $883.7B defense bill passed by the House (thehill.com)

Committee Chair Mike Rogers (R-Ala.) said the bill “will help revitalize the defense industrial base and build the ready, capable, and lethal fighting force we need to deter China and our other adversaries.”
Defense spending should be half this figure IMHO.  If we are going to steadfastly refuse to defend our own Southern Border then Defense Spending should be reduced to zero.  There is no reason to spend money defending the borders of Israel and Ukraine when we don't spend money defending our own.

This, exactly.

That said, it is also very much NOT an American issue.  Not my circus, not my monkeys, deal with it amongst yourselves.

The breakup of the Ottoman Empire in WWI led to the British "Mandate of Palestine".  All hell didn't break loose until the British pulled out after WWII.

One of the biggest foreign policy mistakes in US history, IMHO, was Eisenhower's decision to squeeze the British and French at the time of Suez.  We should have given them a free hand and stayed the hell out.  Instead, we effectively forced them to walk back their invasion which caused the British and French to basically walk away and caused Israel specifically and the Middle East in general to fall into our Orbit and become our problem.
