Ex-NATO commander says West sending Ukraine tanks ‘creates real problems for Putin’ | The Hill

I lean to thinking this is overselling the tactical value of these tanks, but of course, I can't be sure of that.
I think you're probably correct, but here's hoping the tanks kick some ruskie ass

Tanks used offensively need support from air, artillery, infantry, and intelligence.  The air part is critical for obvious reasons.  You could have a zillion tanks and see them blown up from Russki helos operating with impunity.  Russki helos are pretty nasty.

And of course if you used the tanks effectively to generate a critical corridor through an opponent's defenses, then you need to hold the flanks against any counterattack.

I just don't know if the Ukranians can use these tanks on the offensive effectively.  This isn't like 23 Easting.

I just had about the goofiest call to United to check our flights ever, which is why I hate having to call Customer "Service".  I understand they put these centers in wherever has cheap labor, and barely passable English, but it's really awful.  I was finally sent to her "supervisor" (which probably is the gal seated next to her) who was about equally clueless.  Thanks for the Internet, Al.

The University of Wisconsin Law School won't participate in this year's U.S. News & World Report rankings, a decision made in protest of how the magazine prioritizes metrics that the school says conflict with its underlying values of accessibility and affordability.

The school's decision, announced Thursday, follows more than a dozen other law schools in a cross-country revolt against the rankings. The withdrawals began last fall when Yale Law School, long ranked No. 1 in the country, said it would not participate because of how the rankings made it harder for schools to admit and support low-income students.

That's a pretty baller move by Yale:  we're #1 on your list, but we think your list sucks, so we're out.

What worries me about China/Taiwan is TSMC. I know @utee94 knows what I'm talking about here.

Right now the West (led by the US) is in a technology embargo war with China. We're restricting exports of the tools they need to build advanced semiconductors.

TSMC is a HUGE linchpin in the global semiconductor market, and based (of course) in Taiwan. Their value can't be overstated to people outside the industry. And semiconductors are, to a large extent, the lifeblood of the modern economy. Essentially every electronic device you own has some semi content in it. Not just your phone, or your PC. I'm talking about your smoke detector. I'm talking about your coffeemaker. Your stove. Your car is full of them. Basically any device that uses electricity is using a modern semiconductor.

If China is being blocked (by the US) from the tech necessary to create advanced semis, do they roll the dice and say "well we're going to simply take it from TSMC"? If they try to do so, does TSMC get sabotaged internally or bombed externally to take it away from China?

W/O TSMC, the global economy will be decimated. At that point it doesn't matter if we or China win; everyone is royally screwed. TSMC is in Taiwan. China thinks they own Taiwan. We're poking China. What will they do?

The rational answer is nothing. Because the demise of TSMC will hurt China terribly. But as Cincy says, we thought Putin would act rationally. And look at how that turned out.

This (among other things) is what keeps me up at night.

That and Purdue Football
Didn't watch a minute of Purdue football this year. Granted, I rarely have any expectations for Purdue football. I know how that story ends. It's decades of irrelevance punctuated by short periods of occasionally looking mildly competent.

Also haven't watched a minute of Purdue basketball this year, despite the fact that we're #1. I also know how that story ends--with a disappointing March.
