China has had shooting wars in the not too distant past.  It's hardly implausible to think they could invade Taiwan.  I don't think they will any time soon, but I can't promise that.
A shooting war with Taiwan is a shooting war with the US.  Not going to happen.

I don't think China would attack because they are winning the Long Game without it, and an actual military attack would cost them enormously, I think, even if successful.  But this hinges on their leaders being "rational".

I thought Putin would act rationally and was wrong.  That surprised me, a lot.

A smaller but highly motivated military can be a very tough nut to crack.  The morale is to the material as ten is to one.

why invade an island 300 miles long about 100 miles off the coast?

could simply blockade and siege

Everything changed. No more wall construction - it would be done by now. Messaging to migrants is to just come on in. He initially cancelled the Remain in Mexico policy, which has since been reinstated after Texas won a lawsuit. Migrants can come in without a Covid test, but up until a few months ago, you and I couldn't. Anyway, enough of this. It's off-topic and not appropriate on the Covid thread.

since we're not on the COVID thread.......
I'm not arguing, just trying to understand what changed
messaging I understand & I understand there's an impact, but not much of a real change in policy or action

no more wall construction is not a physical change, it's actually no change
Trump forced COVID tests on migrants? and then sent them back if positive?

one big change is that Mexico is no longer helping to stop the mass from approaching the boarder

Trump had reached an agreement with Mexico and Brandon has walked away from it

Ying Fang sings Barbarina’s aria from Le Nozze di Figaro 2014 - YouTube

Ying Fang, Ilia - YouTube

This gal sang at the concert tonight, she can light up the auditorium.  Maybe the best female voice I've ever heard.

Other than my wife's.

A blockade is an act of war of course and Taiwan would respond accordingly.  China could mine the waters, that is more surreptitious.  I don't know the state of mine technology today, they aren't used much anywhere, though were in the Iran-Iraq war.  I know some can be sunk and remain inactive for a time and then become active on command.  One way to deter a Chinese ground invasion would be with mines.  They can be troublesome for supply and troop ships.

If China did invade, logistics would be their toughest challenge and weakest link unless they had air superiority in the straits.

so, Biden would park multiple aircraft carriers near Taiwan to provide the superior air support?

I'd guess once China put troops on the island there wouldn't be much resistance

not familiar with Taiwan's military strength but, the island is a bout 300 miles long and not 100 miles wide

Taiwan has a pretty tough military today, they would put up a fight.  It would take days for the US to get multiple carriers into position, we could get one in fairly quickly.  China would be prepared for that of course.

Our submarines would probably be a more dangerous adversary for the Chinese.

sinking transport troop ships?

or nukes?

I wouldn't think the subs would want to be in the 100 mile wide space between the mainland and the island

Subs have long range antiship missiles on board, they don't have to use close in torpedoes.

Ex-NATO commander says West sending Ukraine tanks ‘creates real problems for Putin’ | The Hill

I lean to thinking this is overselling the tactical value of these tanks, but of course, I can't be sure of that.
