We used to have a hot convo about Ukraine.  It's still in the news, albeit to a lesser extent, and the battle lines seem to have stagnated largely with some minor shifts.

The recent news is about sending Western tanks to Ukraine.  I know the Abrams is a logistical nightmare of sorts and requires a good bit of training to employ and support effectively.

I think the US did an about face this week on the M1 Abrams just to get the feckless Germans to agree to sending them their more suitable Leopard tanks.  Military people seem to think a Ukraine armed with a large number of Leopard 2s as well as the other armored vehicles the West is sending them has a good chance to break the trench warfare and push the Russians out.

The best thing would be to take out dickface Putin. The problem is that he probably has 10 look-alikes running around.

The effective use of tanks in combined arms warfare requires a good deal of training, planning, and skill in other areas, like achieving some degree of air superiority and a strong logistics effort.  The Ukrainians stopped Russian tanks with cheap missiles, the Russians can do the same.

It's not as if the Leopard II is massively better than the T-82.  It's better if used wisely.  I won't be shocked if Ukraine digs a lot of these in as semi-mobile pill boxes, which would be defensive in nature.  I can't quite see them mounting a real offensive like was seen in WW 2.  I dunno.

The modern Leopard 2A6 is a huge upgrade over the Soviet T-72s and T-90s.    The war in Ukraine is becoming one of survival for Putin.  Putin is running out of options like the cornered rat from his childhood.  Putin still can declare war and mobilize Russia which would be bad for his image at home.  Should he be overthrown his replacement will be just as hard line but would be free to extricate Russia from Ukraine.  Lets hope that happens without Putin resorting to tactical nukes.

It's more capable if used wisely, sure.  That is the question in my mind.

Andrew Zimmern's Unpopular Opinion About American Breakfast (thedailymeal.com)
Andrew Zimmern's Unpopular Opinion About American Breakfast (thedailymeal.com)

Unsurprisingly, in the Super-Sized food culture of the U.S., breakfast is big — and big business. Statista reports that 283.39 million Americans chowed down on cold breakfast cereal in 2020, and in 2022, the country spent almost $1.40 billion on bacon and ate almost 300 eggs per person. But the idea of a hearty, greasy morning meal is kind of unique to the States. Around the world, breakfasts tend to be on the lighter side, like pastries, fruits, and simple plates of meat, fish, and veggies. CNN Travel juxtaposes international breakfasts like Tunisian chickpea soup with American buttermilk pancakes, which are often made with chocolate chips, paired with bacon, and always drowning in maple syrup. So it's little wonder that globetrotting food celebs like Andrew Zimmern have experienced all kinds of breakfasts — and find the stateside spread to be problematic.

When it comes to cooking scrambled eggs, Burrell swears by adding a tablespoon of water to the eggs just before they are beaten together, per The Daily Star. This helps cook the eggs to perfection because as the water boils the steam distributes heat, which ensures an even cooking process (via Real Simple). This process benefits the egg's final texture, as explained by food scientist Natalie Alibrandi. "By adding water to eggs, you're preventing the proteins from binding too quickly," she said. "The water creates steam when heated, and the result is a fluffier texture. [However] If you add too much water, your eggs will be runnier and more diluted in flavor," (via Well + Good).

I much prefer the European breakfasts to the gut bombs served here.

Breakfast is absolutely NOT the most important meal of the day.

I know who to blame.

Yup

Yeah and they're not really seeing any T-90s, which means Russia doesn't have any to send.  I'm assuming that some general appropriated most of the modern tank budget to build his dachas in Crimea.

The most modern tank Ukraine is facing with any regularity is the T-72, and those are getting wiped out easily en masse.  Mostly because the Russians have proven terrible at using combined arms strategies.  They often send infantry without armor, artillery, or air support, as well as sending armor without infantry support.  The Western nations training Ukraine are proving their methods using combined arms to be far more effective.

Obviously though, there's a difference between holding ground, and attempting to retake it.  That's going to be difficult for Ukraine, unless/until Russia runs out of meat to throw into the grinder.  Russian losses to this point would be considered catastrophic for any Western country, but unfortunately Russians are more than accustomed to allowing their leaders have them slaughtered.

I was thinking that our supply of Abrams tanks was kind of limited, like we haven’t made any new ones in decades.

I don’t think the average person realizes that the tank is powered by a gas turbine engine, basically a jet engine in a tank.

I’m sorta worried one will get lost and fall into Russias hands. But then I think maybe tanks have become like battleships. Not very useful on the modern battlefield.

Oh, c'mon, man.

Stalin only killed, like, 20 million Russians.  And some estimates say as little as 6 million of his own people killed.

I mean, the Russians didn't even come close to breaking Mao's record, who's undefeated streak against 60 million Chinese nationals still makes him the GOAT on every Communist National Title ranking I've seen.  Some people try to make the argument that D1-AA--now FCS (F'in Communist Socialist)--Pol Pot is actually the GOAT adjusted for weight class, but imo Cambodia's special teams were weak and the defense was suspect.
