btw; is it me or why does it seem that every 'executive' golf course I've ever played is one of those where you feel like you need a helmet?  the routing is awful,  you're always on guard and there's constantly people from other holes playing from your fairway (or tee!) or you're doing the same to others.

Well, the defining feature of most exec courses is that they simply don't have enough available land to be "real" courses. If they had more land, they'd be full-length courses. So they're trying to get the most compact routing they can. 

Because they're so short, they don't tend to attract a lot of "expert" golfers. Rather, they attract all manner of hackers, duffers, and general novices. So not only is the routing compact, you have a TON of players that couldn't find their own fairway anyway. 

So compact routing + bad golfers = danger.

no question about it.  It also seems to bring in the pull cart crowd.  ... now I'm just being snobby.    I do love playing some of the purposefully designed par 3 courses.    There's one in the Black Hills which is spectacular, and I can think of a few beauties in WI and MI.

Walking a course is the proper way to experience golf IMHO. Given that caddies are expensive [and not like you could find one] and that carrying ones own bag is a lot of work, pull-carts (or push-carts in my case) are a way for people who enjoy walking the course to continue to do so.

When I was in college I worked at a golf course. Cashier, picking up range balls, cleaning clubs, washing carts, grunt work.

Anyway, the pro there at the time would tell young kids the way to properly play golf was to walk the course.  However, he got a cut of the cart revenue that came in so anytime someone showed up and wanted to walk he would get annoyed and sometimes be noticeably rude to them.

The irony of his dueling outlooks on walking  was always lost on him.  I’ve seen him talk about the virtues of walking and then cuss a walker “as a cheap motherf*****” within a span of 10 minutes.

That movie was made the year I was born.

Met a smokin hot blonde a year younger than me at Purdue named Lacy. Assume the name came from the film. Sadly, the story didn't get any more interesting than that
