Hey, I resemble that remark!

Walking a course is the proper way to experience golf IMHO. Given that caddies are expensive [and not like you could find one] and that carrying ones own bag is a lot of work, pull-carts (or push-carts in my case) are a way for people who enjoy walking the course to continue to do so.
If you follow the headlines, you may have read about a California bill known as AB672. It is listed on the docket under the heading, ‘Publicly owned golf courses: conversion: affordable housing.’

The proposed legislation would incentivize cities to repurpose their munis by offering them state funds to build housing on the courses.

AB672’s author is Cristina Garcia, a State Assemblymember who represents a district in east Los Angeles. When I spoke with her late last spring, shortly after she first brought the bill to the floor, Garcia told me that she had no gripe with golf. She simply wondered whether, in densely populated areas of the state, munis were the best use of public land. AB672, she said at the time, was her way of “planting a flag in the ground and starting a conversation.”

According to data from the National Golf Foundation and the Southern California Golf Association, 22 percent of courses in California are munis. They represent about 45 percent of rounds played, and some 90 percent of the game’s growth and diversity programs.

Even if they have tee boxes and golf greens on them, they're still publicly owned green spaces, right?  I thought Californians valued such things?

A little over 2 years ago our city purchased the local golf course that I most often play, and one of the reasons was to preserve green space.

One of the others was to make sure it wouldn't be converted to high-density housing. Because the last thing South Orange County needs is more housing, right?

Well, golf is a rich person sport, and they hate rich people. So the question is whether they like green space more than they hate rich people.

They also like "affordable housing", as far as affordable housing is far away from themselves. If it gets too close, then you live near poor people, and they don't like that either.

Well my BIL already moved from Oregon to San Antonio... And my MIL is flying there today to look for a house as their Oregon house sold in a day.

94's neighborhood is a short drive from San Antonio...

It should be clear that the plan is not just your typical California "soak the rich" plan. It's to replace private health insurance with single-payer.

So there should be, in some way, offsetting savings in health care / insurance spending that balance to some degree the additional taxes.

It wouldn't surprise me if many employers, especially white-collar jobs, simply raise their employee wages in a one-time move in the amount of money that the employer currently spends on premiums insuring said employees.

That said, it would likely be still be a significant net negative for my family, as our income would mean that the additional taxes would likely exceed the savings by a significant margin. And then we'd be stuck with single-payer health care, which would likely be a downgrade, as right now we've got tremendous insurance benefits by being part of a large multinational tech company.

And let's be honest... If this DOES pass, it's just a matter of time before it spreads to your states... Even Florida.

Probably not Florida or Texas, or many of the rest of the states with zero state income taxes, sans Washington.

It probably won’t pass. Or if it does, it won’t do most of the scary things. So problem solved.

Interesting observation today at the Grocery Store.

My better half and I go in small trips- pick up a couple things so to speak.

Well since 3 of my good friends are coming in for a golf weekend- I needed a “ Major trip” for groceries.

Went up and down all the isles- and was surprised at how much empty shelves were prevalent.

I am certainly NOT complaining as I feel we are fortunate to have the nearly unlimited consumer shopping choices we have.

Just one of those things you have been reading about- but it really sinks in when you see it with your own eyes.
Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

Our grocery stores are still pretty well stocked but odd things go out of availability every now and then.

For example, our kids like to pack Cheez-its with their school lunches, and we typically buy the big box of individually wrapped packages of them.  But for a couple of months, we haven't been able to find them on store shelves, and then when we finally did, they only had the "extra toasty" version available.  The kids will somehow manage to live with those, but it's weird what you can't get, and what we took for granted, before all this started.
