Like there are some old-as-dirt people here that should maybe try growing up.

Dirt is a general term, so it's not possible to assess its age, but I'd say it's broadly older than any living human.

I'd like to know more about plastic pollution in the oceans.  We see these photos of course.  But when I fly over an ocean or visit a beach I don't see that sort of thing, I suspect the waste accumulates in smaller areas due to ocean currents.  Someone takes a photo and implies everything is like that.

It's similar to photos of the Tenderloin district in SF.  It's pretty bad, but it's not the whole city, or even a major part of it.

Most of the plastic is what I'd describe as pulverized and is tiny pieces.  Also, much of it doesn't float on top of the water, but at a level below.  That's why there's no giant plastic heap the size of Texas circulating in a spot in the Pacific that you can fly over and easily spot.

Once again, we are exactly the same age.

But I look a lot younger. :)

Yup, all of this.  It breaks down some, but not entirely.  And then it sinks just below the surface so it can't really be seen from above.

There's a lot of research and effort going into determining if there's some way to harvest it and re-use it.  Ideally we'd get to a point where it's profitable to harvest rather than manufacture new, in which case the problem would take care of itself.  But even if it got to the point where it were neutral or even just slightly more expensive, I think we'd have a large number of Good Actors engaging in it.  We're still a LONG way off from that, of course, but I'll never say never.

The very large computer manufacturing corporation I work for does a lot of work in eco-friendly packaging, and is also investing in ocean plastics work, but mostly from the perspective of preventing it from entering our waterways to begin with.

The main problem with recycling plastics, and it's a HUGE problem, is having a mixture of different types of plastic.  Most of it is polyethylene, fairly easy to recycle IF it's a pure stream, or has minor impurities.  But, your milk jug is PE, fine, and the CAP is PP (polypropylene).  Coke bottles are PET.  Fishing line is nylon.

You get all this crap together and you can't do anything with it but burn it.

Then you have polystyrene, which is usually from packaging, the white foam stuff.  Then there is polyurethane, usually foam stuff inside pillows and whatnot or insulation.

And then you have rubber tires, which technically isn't plastic and usually isn't in the same stream.  Usually.

Most stuff we put in the recycling bin goes to landfill.

My brother worked for a company in this line of work.He even went over to China 3X.Didn't know putting caps on bottles was so involved

I have been sleeping terribly late. I would ask the group at large for tips on better sleep, but I think going to bed before midnight should probably be my first move. Bleh.
Do you have any sleep irregularities?

Those Colt Brennan photos could just be hair-growth updates during covid quarantine, lol.

Lol, see, going through those Colt Brennan mishaps is our focal point for when we find out some of our peers who did socially well in high school are not doing so well now. It parallels especially well because Colt is only a few years older (mid-30s) and after a dozen years lost in in translation you come to find out, like several of your high school buddies, they've picked up some baggage. I only recently found out that two of the dudes I hung out with nearly everyday of high school have done time for drug arrests. One is a surprise, the other everyone saw going down the drain.

There is a temperature at which plastics will depolymerize if no oxygen is present, and you can in theory collect the gases coming off to use to make more polymers.

It's a lot cheaper to make monomers from petroleum or NG or even coal.

I passed 70,000 words on Book 3 and decided to end it there, so there will be a Book 4.

Now I need to proof read which I hate.
