I wonder how hard he could throw today, and if he throws "for fun".

When Betelgeuse goes supernova, what will it look like from Earth? | Astronomy.com

That'd be pretty cool. Up to 100+ days of something becoming the second-brightest object in the night sky... And potentially on the upper end almost rivaling a full moon.

When the puppy woke me up at 5:20 AM this morning to take him out to go potty (thanks, Jake!), it was still dark except for the full moon--which was bright enough to cast shadows.

Unfortunately for us, this supernova could be tomorrow, or in a million years (probably less).  It would be supercool, and the reactions by the less informed among us would be epic.

There is a temperature at which plastics will depolymerize if no oxygen is present, and you can in theory collect the gases coming off to use to make more polymers.

It's a lot cheaper to make monomers from petroleum or NG or even coal.
The very large computer manufacturing company that I work for, uses a cool product called AirCarbon for some of its packaging.  The process actually pulls carbon out of the atmosphere to produce the plastic sheeting.

Newlight’s AirCarbon hits the market running (plasticstoday.com)

This looks expensive, money perhaps spent for a PR purpose rather than something of substance.

The figures I've seen show normal plants do a far better job of converting CO2 to something with substance (cellulose for example).

PHA: A biopolymer whose time has finally come (acs.org)

I was involved in this when Metabolix made a run and creating a market.  They failed miserably.  This stuff is very small relative to the market for polyethylene, but it looks nice for public relations.

While the price of polymers such as PP and PE is around US$0.60–0.87/lb, PHA biopolymer cost is estimated to be 3–4 times higher, ranging between US$2.25–2.75/lb [7,8]

Guys, we've all done it, none of us are above the fray, none of us have the high ground.

Except for badgerfan. He's beyond reproach.

So, can we just move on?

so, after being on vacation for a week, going back 2 days is plenty to catch up?

Wouldn't a supernova we see tomorrow have happened millions of years ago?

It is expensive, relatively speaking.  It's also a valuable project.  We've also done packaging using bamboo, and mushrooms.  It's going to take some experimentation and some commitment to bring viable products to market.
