We went out and got red hots, deep dish pizza, and then one day they took me to a Greek place.  I'd had Greek food before, and knew I'd like it, but for some reason I'd never had dessert at any Greek restaurant.  They ordered some baklava and it looked a little weird to me, but I've always been willing to try pretty much anything.  From the moment I bit into it, I knew I'd found ambrosia from the gods, and I knew it would be my favorite dessert for the rest of my life.

I don't eat it much, I don't eat any sweets all that often, but sometimes I'll go out of my way to stop by my favorite Greek place in town to snag some baklava.  And it tastes as delicious today as it did back then.
I can't stand baklava. It's so cloyingly sweet that more than one bite is way too much for me.

I do love Greek food, and one of the things I miss about Chicago was how ubiquitous good gyro sandwiches were. Seemed like just about little lunch joint had them, and they were all good.

Good Greek food isn't exactly impossible to find here in SoCal, but not particularly easy either.

Agree on both Greek food generally, and baklava specifically. I love Greek food.

Greektown is about done. The restrictions are killing them - even places like Greek Islands are talking about closing, and Santorini. Many are already gone.

The one our family always went to was The Parthenon, which I heard closed a few years ago under a cloud of rumor...

When I took my wife to Chicago last fall, we went to Greek Islands. The best Greek place we can find here is a little family chain of I think 3 locations in the Long Beach area called George's. It's very good, and for my wife who grew up in that area, it's her standard for Greek. But even she said the Greek Islands blew it out of the water.

Now you're speaking my language!

As long as it's homemade eggnog of course.  I can't stand the storebought stuff.

I still have about a quart of nog from last year's final batch.  We'll likely make another batch Thanksgiving weekend, and I'll do a vertical to compare the aged version versus the fresh.  I've done it before and the aged does well, but it also loses some of its body.  The structure holds up better on the fresh stuff.

It's definitely sweet but I don't find it to be cloyingly so.  It's far more natural, IMO, compared to modern desserts, candy, and treats.  I like the honey/syrup and the nuts.  It's just a very old-world kind of food, compared to modern cakes and pies and cookies which are just way over the top for me.  But there's certainly a reason why it comes in those tiny little triangles, a little goes a long way.  But for me, that's true of anything sweet.

If you're expense accounting, or if you want to put down some of your own money for a great meal in San Francisco, Kokkari is excellent.

When I used to work late a lot and eat dinner at the office, the only restaurant that recognized me was the little Greek grill right across the street. Years after I stopped working there, I walked in and the guy recognized me and made me what I always ordered (verifying it with me, of course, but he still knew).

Yeah I like baklava because it isn't as sweet as other desserts.

Was there many years ago, completely agree. It's great stuff.

Oddly while I was there I saw this group of extremely tall [and mostly African-American] young men all going to a table together. Apparently it was St John's basketball team which was out in SF to play [I think] St Mary's. Wish I had realized it at the time because I might have tried to find Gene Keady who was an assistant or consultant with the program at the time.

Yeah, if Parthenon didn't close, they were going to BE closed.

Santorini is my favorite. Costa's used to be.

I've been to George's. It's not bad at all.

Our Turkish friend notes that Greek food is really just Turkish food.

Greek yogurt was popularized by a Turk.  Now it's hard to find nonGreek yogurt.

Can your Turkish friends explain "Why did Constantinople get the works?"
