California has grown to be by far the most populous state.  Calling it a failed state is not serious.  Much of the west is more or less an empty lot.  Property values are going to ensure that people slowly move away from California and towards somewhere cheaper.
California is a failed state. It wasn't that long ago that the state government was so deeply in debt that it was issuing IOU's to state employees instead of pay checks. Less than 10 years ago.

California has nearly 30% of all homeless people in this country. One state. 30% of all homelessness. Why is that? And the homeless are turning the big cities like LA and San Fransisco into a literal dumping ground.

People leaving doesn't have as much to do with property values. There are other parts of California they could move to that are cheap. And there are a lot of rich people with plenty of money that can afford the high property value in the in-demand areas like SF/LA that are fleeing because of the INSANE taxes. And the state is trying to- not sure if it has passed yet- but they were trying to go from 13.3% state income tax for top earners to 16.8% AND institute a state wealth tax as well- the first of it's kind in any state. And as part of that wealth tax- the cocksuckers were trying to tax wealthy people who left the state for up to 10 years.

I like visiting and fund most of the state to be rather nice.  Parts are not.  Just my perspective.

That's nice, but 73 percent of residents are from Florida and they can still complain about interlopers. And I bet some of the transplants complain about them too.
This is inaccurate. Last I read, less than 35% of Florida residents were actually born/native to Florida.

Seems like damn near half of South Florida has roots from NY/NJ.

It is rare in Atlanta to meet someone "from here".  Some of the older upper class folks are from here.  The 'burbs have always been interlopers.

We're used to it.  The crew doing our tile job are Brazilian.

The guys doing our kitchen were from South Africa.

They have all been extremely nice and diligent and careful.

I mean, come on.  It's the largest non-country economy in the world, would be the fifth biggest economy in the world, has two of the top three city economies in the country, and also has the highest agricultural output in the country.  Not sure what failure means if you call that a failure.  It has the most people and the most money. Calling California a failed state is like calling OSU a failed football program.

Well here's the data of where people were born.

73 percent. If you'd like to show me that 35 percent, I'd love to see it.

Wait, a political columnist wrote something bombastic to get attention? That's crazy. Next thing, I'll learn Michigan bloggers think OSU is up to no good.

It's almost like people from other places are just people, and broadly categorizing them is both petty and childish. Almost.

It's actually 36%, second lowest native born population in the nation. Would bet these numbers have probably maintained similar as 1,000+ people a day have been moving to Florida every year for the past 10+ years.

"Just 36 percent of Florida's residents were born in Florida as of 2012. Only Nevada has a smaller native population, with only 25 percent of residents born in the state, but Nevada isn't so much a state as it is a collection of brothels and casinos in the desert anyway."

Calling CA a "failed state" is an opinion, unless one devises criteria for measuring state failure.

The did have fiscal problems in 2009, but largely have traversed that until COVID.

I personally would view a failed state as one technically bankrupt.  Illinois comes to mind as a state with a really bad fiscal situation that gets ignored often as not.

But if you visit the state, people are still carrying on much as before.

If you visit CA, you drive around and stay in motels and see the sights and eat in restaurants etc. and it mostly seems pretty nice to me.

Well crap. I grabbed the wrong denominator. My mistake. Apologies.

Fortunately, your state is 16-20 percent Northeasterners, 21 percent foreigners and 11 percent midwesterners. Hat tip to your welcoming state and a wonderful country that allows such mobility that were a person is from is in many ways a superficial signifier.

73 percent in the summer. 35 percent in the winter. Trust me. I see it happening before my eyes.

I'm surprised the coasts don't fall off when everyone shows up.
