Right now, sort of infamously, Italy is sitting home and didn't make the World Cup tournament.  This is the 3rd World Cup in a row they failed to qualify for, which is pretty shocking for a country that historically has been quite successful and has won 4 of them total, which ties them for second place all-time
And, the next opponent for the USMNT is:

Italy was eliminated by Bosnia & Herzegovina in the UEFA World Cup playoff final on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Italy’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup ended in a dramatic playoff final against Bosnia & Herzegovina on 31 March 2026.

it is really hard for me to wrap my head around Italy not being in WC, but.....Tunisia is....Cuaracao is....etc. in this bloated field.  I understand (sort of) the methods of qualification.

They have it, and have even used it to yellow card an opponent of the US for a flop. But IMO VAR (Video Assisted Review) has actually made the game worse, not better, and I'm glad they don't slow the game down to review all the flopping. It would be a grind. Instead, just don't call penalties when you think it's a flop.

This referee may have only carded one or two flops in his 500 or so games, but when I see what I suspect is flopping from a player, it becomes much harder for me to call a foul against a player challenging him or her (but it's mostly him; the girls flop less).

We were resting on our trip in the hotel and I flipped on the TV and watched a bit of soccer.  I think in about five minutes I saw 3 players obviously doing a Lebron.  It really turns me off, so I turned the channel.

It's is THE WORST thing about soccer these days IMHO.

That VAR reversed a game winning goal Iran scored against Egypt.  Dude's big toe was shown to be "offsides."

The sport is just absolutely flawed with that rule, imo.  Combine that with all the fakery, it's just Un-'Merican.

But I will watch some more, I guess.

The $100 I spent to watch the Royals hasn't panned out very well.  Promising season turned sour with the injury bug and the 3/4 hitters around the Mendoza line (one of which caught an injury anyway.)

It's an accepted part of the game.

It is nothing like flopping in basketball, where the guy just falls back trying to draw a foul.

They writhe, scream, and put on a hell of an acting show, just to be up and sprinting full-speed moments later.  It's a SKILL players develop.
This is exhibit 193513053452375 why soccer isn't big-time in the US.

I don't think it has anything to do with popularity. For soccer, they don't want to call fouls unless it impacts the play, but if they don't go flying like a rocket ship, it didn't impact the play. So that's why it goes that way. Have to live with it.

Football has similar problems on the contact they allow on passing plays. Basketball has foul baiting being a constant annoying issue. Such is life.
