Wow--I loved London. Touristy stuff? Sure. But it was great. Saw the palace / changing of the guard (that wasn't great, but it wasn't bad, either). Churchill war rooms / museum were very cool, parliament was interesting, Westminster was interesting (one of the original versions of the Magna Carta is there), British Museum was awesome (as museums go)--the greatest collection of stolen artifacts in the world (including most of the Parthenon from Greece), Trafalgar Square was interesting, Tower of London was touristy and awesome, Abbey Road and the Beatles recording studio were alright (SFIrish really wanted to see go). We stayed in Notting Hill. Nice walking area, lots of green parks in the City, and there were so many more things we wanted to do: several walking tours looked really interesting, many more museums that I would have gone to. Took the underground everywhere, which was easy.

We enjoyed mostly pub food. Was it amazing? No. Was it good? Yes. As was the beer.

We also took a day trip out to Bovington (the British tank museum), which was very cool if you are into tanks, and Stonehenge, which I expected to be completely stupid. I actually really liked it. Driving a manual on the wrong side was curious. I only hit one curb (I think), but [mostly] enjoyed the challenge. But I do not recommend renting a car from an off-airport agency. Oof, that was an ordeal.

Everyone in my family really wants to go back.

Bovington is definitely on my list to visit.  We saw Stonehenge last year, meh.  We stayed in South Hampton a couple days before a cruise around the British Isles with stops in Ireland.  Decent cruise, hit some very rough weather.  I personally would rather see more rural England.

Thanks SFB96...

Good to hear from someone who isn't our resident curmudgeon, or for someone who's never impressed by anything :57:

And I hear you on the driving... When I went to Ireland almost 2 years ago it was driving on the wrong side of the road, from the wrong side of the car, shifting a manual with the wrong hand, on some very narrow back roads w/o a center line.

The most hilarious thing about it was when we got to Killarney, after dinner before going to bed, this movie came on... I suddenly understood this scene much better:

I resemble that remark.  I have enjoyed many cities in Europe, some lesser known.

My wife wanted a "pin map" to chart our journeys, I got her a smallish one, pretty nice.  She really likes it, but we both realized we've been forunate to visit some pretty exotic locales, she doesn't have enough pins.

Nebraska's highest point asks nothing of you but a dirt road and a cattle gate you latch behind you. There's a stone marker, a bench, and a herd of bison with the better view.

I highly recommend The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs.   I attended a conference there this week.  Amazing service, beautiful grounds and probably the toughest greens ive ever putted on.  Very fair just challenging. . My foursome did win the scramble.

Definitely lives up to its rep.

FIL took us there last time we went to visit him in Co. Springs.  Neat place.

We have a trip scheduled to France late November, part of which is with an Atlanta Symphony group.  Our music director is conducting a concert in Monaco we will attend as a group.  Geesh, France is expensive.  I got some relatively cheap tickets to CDG in premium, but hotels are $$$ everywhere.  I guess I knew this.  I thought December would be cheaper.

In other news, I tried without success to book a river cruise on Viking, everything sends me to some travel agency.  Then the "low ad prices" aren't real.  Quite annoying.

Incidentally, in Fontainebleau there is an apartment for rent for less than $100 a night.  We stayed there before, it's very clean, great location, and spacious.  We're staying there three nights so that helps some.  Taxes are almost as much as the rent.

That's a pretty nice smaller city, I think, with some stuff around it worth seeing, along with various friends living nearby.
