It's also ground zero of the fundamentalist mormons with underage wives.

The FLDS actually moved out of there.

But yeah, it was kind of scary when they ran the place. Not gonna lie.

Kind of embarrassing to admit this, but I was probably in my 20's before I realized that Kansas City was in both Missouri and Kansas.  I didn't have a concept of Kansas City, Missouri versus Kansas City, Kansas.  Never been to either one.

Kind of the same thing on the other side of the state with St. Louis, which sits mostly in MO but also in IL.  I think the IL side might technically be called East St. Louis, though.  Whereas Kansas City is just that in both states.

I think.

East St. Louis was made famous in National Lampoon's Vacation.  The family truckster got it's wheels hi-jacked.

On a personal note, I literally witnessed in broad daylight a dude take a crowbar to a dead vehicle on the interstate, and bust out windows to get inside.

KCK, affectionately known as The Dotte, slang for Wyandotte County, KS, is also notoriously hood oriented.

But, they have really developed that Legends area out on the NW corner of I-70 and 435.  Ironicially, the East end of I-70 and the 435 loop around town is where the Truman Sports Complex was built.

Re the building of the area around TSC, it's just a complete failure of government of KCMO to do things to help revitalize and grow the area.  There were nice places there when I was a kid.  We actually braved walking across 435 from one to go to the stadium, but I think those places are all dilapidated crapholes now.

This conversation and pic of the TSC reminds me, probably 10 years ago Jackson Co (KCMO) floated a proposal on the ballot to spend umpteen millions of dollars, to build an at the time a never before contemplated (or even preliminarily designed) "rolling roof" that could be moved from on top of one stadium to the other.

It failed, as have all the ballot initiatives trying to keep the Chiefs on the MO side.  Kansas found the bucks.
Wonder if that’s actually a net good for Kansas or not economically.

Good question.  I don't know that we will ever know.

I should supplement my description of the Kansas side of KC, though.  Wyandotte County contains KCK, which I believe I aptly described as "the hood," but south of there sits Johnson County, which is very affluent, with exploding suburbs and is now the largest county in Kansas population wise--bigger than Sedgwick County that has Wichita.

They have a huge influx of recent college grads, and quite a few people moving there from the Missouri side.  It's the real growth area of the metro.

As to Fearless' post regarding soccer, that sport really is being embraced.  The Legends area (where the Chiefs are going) has a dedicated soccer stadium for the men's pro team, and the Mahomes' were drivers in building a new downtown soccer stadium dedicated to the women's pro team.

Watched a youtube on all the development this morning, I'll put it up if any of yunz dudes have time you really want to kill.

I feel like all the studies point to those not actually paying off for municipalities (unless you count soft value)

In some ways, getting the other half of your city to pay for it would maybe be good, if it’s basically still there. (Not like say how it happened in SF, where the Niners went from an inconvenient location to a very inconvenient one)
