In the past 15 years, the fewest losses MINN has had is 4.  They didn't have an easy schedule in any of the past 15 years?

True. You can't feast on cupcakes when you are one of the cupcakes.

Definitely a major upgrade.

I'd guess if PJ wins another COY's it will include either a B1G or Division championship

Was Kirk's first w/o?
No, his 3rd. 2009, he finished 2nd in conference at 10-2, behind champ 10-2 OSU. And we all know you can't give a COY to OSU at 10-2, conference title be damned!

This is the first time they won 10 games. Ever. This is true.

Lost to their biggest rivals, in November, one of which was a beat down - at home.

Crossovers included _____ and Maryland. Squeaked by PSU at home.

Went to OT to beat Fresno. Beat South Dakota State by 7. Beat Georgia Southern by 3.

Easiest schedule, by far.
This after-the-fact poo-pooing is gross.  Squeaked by.  Stop that.
Minnesota mattered in late November!  That is insane!  It's unprecedented in our lifetimes...literally!

We can crap on OSU for failing to go 11-1, but we may NOT do it to Minnesota.  Shame.

Your hate for the SEC/Alabama/Saban is so strong, none of you considered what I put could be anything but dragging down the resume of OSU.  No one sought clarification.  I'm actually not an SEC homer.  I know you'll scoff at that collectively, but it's true.
Ya you're a beacon of universal insight and a voice of truth and reason.Only you in your snow globe of asbestos would state LSU beating Bama in T-Town after two weeks off doesn't prove they're better. So we should probably wait for your unrivaled intelligence before our less evolved cognitive abilities come to any rash conclusions.

The troll getting trolled. LOVE IT!
and yet he continues to post gibberish, and thinks he is cute doing it.

Put me in the camp that is shocked that the media gave the participation trophy to Day over PJ, but also put me in the camp that thinks Day did an amazing coaching job this year.

Damn, man.  I post about Day/OSU/Meyer's leftovers and you guys have to insert Saban and Bama and the SEC.

Serious question:  how bad a HC would someone have to be to have lost a game in Day's shoes?

The Minnesota Golden Gophers went 10-2 this year.
This is sort of a vast and meaningless counterfactual. It wades into what amounts to a kind of negative space that exists around most sports.

The answer is probably not particularly bad. One of the best coaches ever had all the talent at OSU and managed it once, looking not super for parts of it. Really great coaches often didn't get to 12-0. Now Day gets a bump for the fact its his first year ever as a head coach. As we know, it's a narrative award as much as anything, less a sort of floating what if question.

(The idea of a "bad" coach is always interesting because usually to be a bad coach at a decent program, you have to be a good coach at a less good program. And ultimately even if you're average or above average, chances are you'll leave fired in disgrace)

I think it is a great coaching job to assemble massive talent, keep them motivated, keep the backups "happy",  take a talented QB new to the system, and have it all "mesh" so convincingly.

No other team had every win this convincing, no close calls.

Yeah, the phrase "in Day's shoes" was lost on all of you.

It meant working under Meyer, learning from him, then taking the reigns of a bunch of clydesdales motivated and taught by one of the best HCs ever.  Day's motivational techniques....where do you think they came from?  His Xs and Os.  The talent pool on the field.

Any one of us would have gone 10-2 or better in Day's shoes this year.

Huh. I kind of thing this is the right result: one organization picking Day, and the other picking Fleck.

Both did a great job. Fleck's might be more of a career award because, yes, Minnesota crumbled at the end against the strong part of its schedule, BUT, this is Minnesota we're talking about, and Fleck has definitely--and dramatically--improved that program. If they remain a threat in the west, Fleck will have completed an impressive turnaround.

And yeah, Day took over the best program and kept it at the top, but--as noted--going 12-0 isn't easy, and Penn State, Wisconsin, and Michigan were all trying hard to knock them off, and none of those three is a patsy.

Who else? Lovie Smith for one big win? Ferentz for Ferentzing? Franklin for being second best? Chryst after the Illinois debacle? Harbaugh? LOL. Tom Allen for getting Indiana to a bowl game? Schiano for returning to Rutgers? Day and Fleck seem obvious to me.

They should have a worst coach of the year award also.

If there was a worst coach award, I'd think it would be possible for the same guy to win both best, and worst.

The bolded part probably means that either (A) everyone who responded to your post is a dunce or (B) you didn't communicate your question clearly.
