Curiously, the adoption of the 5.56 NATO round as the most common round type in America was rapid and overwhelming. But I don't think the same thing has happened in the handgun market. I presume that .38, 9mm, and .45 are all about equally common these days, with a significant number of .32, .357, and .44 running around, too.

Regardless, when the zombie apocalypse comes: maintain your calm, grab yourself something that shoots .5.56 NATO, and get on a sailboat out at sea.

Yeah, we have the 556 Nato for the AR. It's a large bullet, as I'm sure you know, having probably fired a few.

The 9mm round is the single most popular handgun round in the world, including in the U.S. and is used by everyone from federal, state and local law-enforcement agencies to competition shooters.
Popular 9mm ammo types include:
  • Full Metal Jacket (FMJ): 9mm FMJ ammo is, by far, the most common and features a lead bullet encased in copper or another hard metal and are primarily used for target or range shooting.
  • Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP): 9mm jacketed hollow points feature a lead bullet with a hollow point inside but are still encased in copper. These bullets expand on impact, increasing stopping power, and are used by the military, law enforcement, and for self-defense.
Its stopping power and the magazine carry capacity of most guns chambered in the round make it a popular choice for home defense. Its light recoil and accuracy, even out of smaller, shorter barrels, also makes it excellent for defense as well as target shooting.
The use of 9mm handguns like the Beretta M9 and the Sig Sauer M17/M18 by the U.S. military and the venerable Glock 19 by law enforcement has popularized the round.

I know for a while 10 mm was popular with some LEOs, I was told it was "too hot".  The 9 mm seems to be a sweet spot.  State patrols might carry 10, dunno, they used to like .357 because of its penetration, speaking of hot rounds.

My graphic shows how rifle rounds generally are a lot more powerful even with smaller "calibers".

I'll note again how naval and artillery rounds use the term "caliber" to mean something different, barrel length, not width.
