What is "traffic calming"?  I guess if traffic is at s standstill, it's calmer?  The drivers aren't.

Below is the "Connector", the only NS freeway in the city, if you get off on a sidestreet, it will move, unless your car lanes are now unused bike lanes.  Juniper has been a disaster, AND they are now doing the same treatment to Piedmont.  We live on Piedmont.  It's going to be epic.

That is true (about the definition of safety incidents), but it's also convenient to blame the bike lanes when there is more at work. I know that's the situation in my city (SFIrish was literally in the room for all of those decisions over the last decade), and I'm confident it is common elsewhere. Painting with a broad brush, we Americans tend to overvalue what we perceive as our convenience with cars, and we devalue safety as a result. And we often make traffic/road construction decisions in the worst possible way, with public comment guiding engineering decisions, as if the public has any idea how to engineer something. The public should guide design intent, engineers should do the actual design. We would never allow the public to comment on the construction of a massive building the way we allow the public to comment on roads, but both have important safety impacts.

Anyway, my main point here is that it isn't just the bikes. And our car-focused culture is often obtuse about safety.

FWIW, I agree that many of these "improvements" end up being silly window dressing that don't actually improve anything, and often make things worse. Sigh.

(And the Juniper Street project may be one of those.)

Oh for sure I'll trust the engineers over the public when it comes to design.

I'll just state that you can reduce traffic related "safety incidents" to zero if you make a road completely impassable.  But being completely impassable isn't the actual purpose of a road.

This is a very walkable area, which is one reason we moved here.  This is why I think most bikes are for recreation, or delivery in some cases, not transportation.  It's not something that takes a car off the streets.  We have these delivery robost all over now anyway.

One question about Waymos.  I can't go out without seeing 3,4,5 of them, driving around, with no passenger (often as not).  Why are they always moving without a passernge?  They can't all be headed for a pickup.  I saw three of them yesterday in sight at the same time.  I know they are EVs.  They seem just to drive around with no objective in mind, to me.  I've yet to use one.

If they had a passenger 30% of the time I'd guess they are picking up when empty.  But they don't.

I wonder about Waymos, too (I've ridden in one; it was cool), and I look forward to the day that I need not own my own car, but can instead rely on subscribing to a car service. That day looks pretty far out. I hoped, in 2019, that I was buying my last car. Clearly I was not (in part because of the situation SFGopher put me in last year), but I still hope.

Still, they do seem to just drive around. I bet that's not what they are actually doing. I suspect Google has algorithms telling them where to be and when, and with good reason.

Bear in mind a Waymo might also be a sort of rolling billboard when there isn't any passenger. It's advertising.

Especially since people might have trepidation about driverless taxis, so seeing them operating [safely] helps to normalize the idea that they can actually be trusted. You don't get that benefit if they're sitting parked somewhere waiting to be hailed.

As you should.

But engineers are also subjected to a lot of pressure from politicians and bureaucrat hacks working for the review agencies.

This is why I only do Land Surveying now.

Practicing Civil Engineering sucks - if you can all doing everything strictly "by the book" practicing.

Just thinking out loud here, but where would a Waymo go to "park" whilst waiting on its next fare?  I'd guess that you'd want it to avoid parking lots for numerous reasons.  And streetside parking is limited and/or expensive in many areas.  Do they operate from some sort of central hub?  And if so, would you really want it to return there, when not in use?

I think they very well could be just wandering around, for some or all of the reasons we've brought up.  I think it's likely that they use a predictive algorith to put them close to the next most likely fares, I think they probably are used as rolling billboards, and I also think there's not a lot of good options for them to park and be safely out of the way.

Yes.  The bolded part first, the italicized part second.

Unusued bike lanes are the running joke in Austin as well.  Scores of millions of dollars spent over the past 20 years.  Still no bikes.

wut?

I used to see a ton of cyclists, particularly in west Austin, like on 360 and stuff, plus downtown also (bearing in mind the amount of time I was downtown....I never worked or lived there).  We always had Lance Armstrong jokes about them.  When I first moved there, I lived in perpetual fear of accidentally hitting them.

Has that changed or are you talking about different parts of the city?

Man I couldn't tell you the last time I saw a cyclist on 360.  It's true there used to be a bunch-- I was one of them.  I lived up in Northwest Hills and would ride down Spicewood Springs Road (the big hill) to 360, and then ride down 360 to the Pennybacker Bridge, and back.  But I don't see anyone doing that anymore.

And downtown, not really any cyclists either.  Despite the millions upon million of dollars spent on bike lanes.  Tons of those stupid Lime and Bird scooters though.

I ride past a parking lot full of Waymos on my daily commute. They definitely do park for extended periods of time.

I like the advertising idea for Waymo.  I guess they don’t cost much to cruise around vs park.   They don’t seem to have passengers often.
