South African Anti-Apartheid Activist Steve Biko Dies in Police Custody (1977)
A former medical student, Biko founded the Black Consciousness Movement in South Africa in 1968 to combat racism and apartheid. He was officially "banned" by the South African government in 1973 and was arrested several times in the years that followed. Arrested for the last time in 1977, he was tortured and beaten to death in police custody, prompting international protests and a UN arms embargo. Twenty years later, five former policemen admitted killing him.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY: 

UN General Assembly Adopts Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (2007)
Over two decades in the making, the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was finally adopted in 2007 despite opposition from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the US. The non-binding declaration prohibits discrimination against the world's estimated 370 million indigenous people and outlines their rights, among them the rights to culture, identity, language, employment, and education.

First Man-Made Object Reaches the Moon (1959)
In the early years of space exploration, the US and USSR launched numerous probes in their race to explore outer space and the Moon in particular. The first probes were intended either to pass very close to the Moon—performing a flyby—or crash directly into it—a maneuver known as a hard landing. The Soviets were the first to succeed in the latter objective. Luna 2 impacted the lunar surface on September 14, 1959.

On September 14, 1974, Eric Clapton reached the top spot on the US charts with his cover of Bob Marley’s I Shot the Sheriff from 461 Ocean Boulevard. Clapton was initially reluctant to even release the song, fearing he could not do justice to Marley’s original, but his band talked him into it.

🎸 Even though Eric Clapton is celebrated as one of the most successful guitarists in history, I Shot the Sheriff stands as his only Number 1 hit single on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Recognizing the 84th anniversary of the Battle of Edson’s (Bloody) Ridge. Considered as a small and localized battle in the overall campaign, it however rates as a key one. The picture appears very close to how it would have been on 13 Sept 42. This was taken in 1944 when the area became a major logistical and training base. A great example of how the Japanese were funneled  by the jungle. Their original plan was sound until the Marines quickly manned the ridge.
