OT - Pet Peeves Thread

Ok... So this is stuff that doesn't elevate in your life to the level of "Grumpy Old Man"...

Just the things that you see other people do and you get annoyed. Things on the level of seeing people type "should of" on the internet instead of "should have".

For me...

People who quote times as EST or PST when we're on daylight savings time. They clearly don't know what the "S" means and just do it because they see other people use it. (Note: I rarely see anyone use EDT/PDT incorrectly--anyone who uses those know what the character means.)

Why is it a pet peeve? Because not only is it incorrect, it's unnecessary! You could easily use just ET or PT and not actually reference standard or daylight time. The only states in the US that don't observe DST are Arizona and Hawaii, and I'm sure people in those states are used to the fact that they need to pay attention to this. For the rest of us, we're all on a level playing field.

So it actually takes people more effort to be wrong than to be simple and correct by omitting the character.

When folks are going to move into the dedicated left-turn/center lane, but begin slowing down significantly in the normal lane, impeding traffic behind them.  Just get over into the center lane and then begin slowing down.

I mean, if there are already vehicles or some other obstruction in the center lane, I get it.  But when it's completely clear for miles and miles?

Definite pet peeve territory.

I do have a lot of them. I'll give you that.

Here's one.

People (including my wife) eating something straight out of a bag that is supposed to be communal.

Like, did you wash your hands after you took that shit? After you pet the f'ing dog (more on dogs later)? After you burped your baby (more on babies later)? After you picked up that penny (that God they are being phased out)?

Now I need to check myself on this one.

I thought that @betarhoalphadelta 's usage was correct.

My understanding is:
  • The punctuation belongs inside the quotation marks if it belongs with the quote and
  • The punctuation belongs outside the quotation marks if it belongs with the combined quoted and non-quoted thought.

So in this example ( @betarhoalphadelta 's OP starting this thread) the quote "should have" is NOT a complete sentence and thus shouldn't have it's own punctuation. Instead, the period at the end of the full sentence belongs to the full sentence and does NOT belong inside the quotation marks.

Am I wrong on this?

That's the rule for question marks and exclamation points.

Periods and commas always go inside the quotation marks.

Ok, so if someone incorrectly used "should of" instead of "should have" my response could be:

  • Shouldn't he have used "should have"? Or
  • He should have used "should have." Or
  • I hate when people use "should of"!
Do I have that right?

Real pet peeve: people who don’t use the center turning lanes and instead wait to be able to make the full turn and slow things down. They give you the center lane so it a two-step process. And that makes it go faster.

The PST thing is funny to me. If only because ET and PT are a movie and a way to recover from injuries. like I understand, it’s wrong, but it just communicate it for some reason

I think there was a time that I was slightly annoyed at people abusing the emotional support thing to take dogs on planes, but then I realized I truly don’t give a shit about what almost any of my fellow passengers are doing. Not to bring up the bad times, but I remember chuckling at an older gentleman in his Navy veteran hat who had cut open the mask he was required to wear.

That's fair.

However, this was not done out of ignorance. There are certain grammatical rules that I find stupid, and choose to violate them. This would be one.

I'm with you on that, and I believe we are smarter than those who make the rules.

So, F them.
