All spot on takes.  I just wish I could convince HER of it, to get her to take some first steps.

My wife has scheduled a campus visit at A&M in a couple of weeks, and I've scheduled one for UT, but she's been to both campuses frequently in her life so I'm not sure either one will generate much excitement.  Maybe something a little smaller and more college-y, like Rice, would help.

I wish you guys the best of luck.  Daughters can be a little more challenging, as I’m sure you know.

But, she’ll take that necessary step, and she’ll be on her way — home free.  But a scary first step, nonetheless.

I love this take, SF.

It is almost verbatim what I told both my boys, and the advice I would give to Utee --- and it's probably worth what I get paid for it.  Zilch.

But, as happened to me, and what I told both boys --- and they've lived it now a bit......Life happens to you, not so much you to it.  When you get out of the nest, paths unfold before you, and your life vision will most certainly morph several times, totally beyond your control.

Make a well thought out first step, and take it.  Life will happen, and doors will open, you will make choices, and some will be made for you.

Somebody needs to go run and find @MikeDeTiger
This might be something he and I can agree on!

Youngest is set to graduate high school and go to community college, but I don't think he has any real intent to finish any kind of college. Oldest is set to graduate from Sam Houston, job markets seems promising.

Best Nuclear Engineering Programs in America
Thanks. I've seen that before, and it's the best graduate programs in NucE. I'm sure there's some decently strong correlation to the undergrad programs... We'll see if he shows any interest in Madison.

It just reminds of me of that country song I heard one time when I was living there, about the girl whose dad went to UT and the mom went to A&M, so she tried them both, and finally became a Texas State Bobcat.

San Marcos ain't so bad.  But don't move there, and Thank You For Your Support.

By the time I was a junior in high school I had my choices narrowed down to Electrical/Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Theater Performance, and English Literature focusing on Creative Writing.

By the time I was a junior in high school, my choices were narrowed down between the girl from English class who worked at the video store, and the girl in band who played clarinet.

Much like what jgvol said, life happened to me, not the other way around.  I dated neither of them.

The wider point is you sure had a lot more figured out at that age than I did.

I'm halfway to retirement and I still can't tell you what I want to do.

When I was a senior I decided I wanted to have the best shot at having a high-paying job out of college, and there was actually a glut of programmers on the market at the time, so EE it was.

I'd be delighted if my daughter could narrow it down to even the broad ideas I had early in high school, but she just doesn't know, and many of her friends do, which scares her.  No matter how much we tell her she doesn't have to make any concrete decisions and just areas of interest would be helpful, she just can't get past her fears.

I think one of those personality profile tests might be good, not so much an aptitude test but rather something that helps determine potential career interests based on what you like (or don't).
Yeah, when I was younger (maybe middle school) I won some award for a creative writing project I participated in and my dad asked me I'd given any though to being a writer. I scoffed, "Nah, I'd like to actually make money, Dad!"

And so then as an outlet for my writing, I became a freelance blogger in the mid-oughts, and now I write tech briefs and white papers. So in a WAY, I did kinda become a writer.

Good thing I also got the money :57:

What does your daughter both show aptitude in and enjoy in her high school curricula?

Oddly enough, I wanted to be a design engineer, and ended up with career choices where I don't design anything :57:

Don't feel bad.  I thought I wanted to be a data scientist, so halfway to old age I went back to school and got a DS degree.

"It's such a hot field," they said.

"You'll have no trouble getting a job," they said.

Zeroes and zeroes of interviews later, here I am, working for a university, technically in a data role, but not hardly close to anything resembling data science.

Or, frankly, getting paid anything close to an entry-level ds role.

Do you think the source of an undergraduate degree means much to potential employers?

Let's sort of categorize them as:

Ivy league types
Very very good but not quite IL in rep, like Duke
Very good, a top public program
Good, the usual state school
Directional, like say "USC" (JK)
Unheard of

I personally didn't find much correlation.

Same.

Mine was creative writing on how to fix motorcycles.

First place.

Not as much as it used to matter.

Guess it depends on the field and the company.  For EE, most firms I've worked for that are hiring fresh-outs, give preference to undergrads from top EE schools.  When a job listing has hundreds or thousands of applicants, it's a quick way for them to narrow the field.  I'm not saying it's a good way to do it, but it's something that is done.

Wisconsin’s College of letters and sciences didn’t even let you declare for a major until you’ve been there three semesters. I always kind of like that outlook.

I remember there was a girl I went to high school with who kind of didn’t give a shit and was anything but a model student. Ever recall her pulling some sub-40s on sophomore, math tests and she definitely didn’t get into a lot of of the mildly competitive schools that most of the people in my high school went to.

she’s a doctor now. I think in some kind of high-end specialty. Married to a middle school classmate. Life comes together in weird ways.

Not as much as it used to matter.
It matters if you are interviewing with an alum of that school.  The "status" of the degree does not, and I don't know that it has for a generation.  Hell, even an Ivy League degree holds no weight outside of the network you have bought your way into
