FWIW, with both of my kids we took trips to visit schools they were very unlikely to attend, just to give them a sense for what different kinds of places feel like (small/big, rural/urban). For both, seeing college sparked their excitement. With my son, I wish I had done it earlier because he started caring more about school when he connected it to his college options. Sounds like that's not an issue for your daughter.

The stress level these kids are going through is already ramping up. The pressure on them to take AP classes and push themselves is insane. And the craziness is that the pressure comes less from parents as it comes from the other students. I'm trying to make sure my son enjoys some of his time in HS, not just have his full time job be focusing on getting into college.

Congrats to your senior! Getting that first acceptance letter, especially if it was one of the "reaches", has to be a huge burden lifted.

Lemme know if/when you're coming to Austin, would be happy to give you advice on the area and if you have time, meet up and I'll buy you a beer (and a coke for your son

).

Heck, I'd even buy you an IPA, if you insisted.

Thanks for the insights, I do think visiting some schools might help make things a little more fun for her, that's a good idea.

I'm open to any other ideas as well, it's been a source of stress in our home, with her just completely shutting down any time we try to talk to her about it.

My first didn't take his student career seriously at all, and received middling grades --- but was accepted to Univ. of Memphis, but had no interest in going. He joined the Navy, did 4 years, and is now using the GI Bill to attend college in Utah.

My 18 year had no interest in the military, took his studies very serious, and was accepted to Tennessee, Utah St, and Utah. The only 3 he applied to, with Utah being his 1st choice. About 2 weeks after being accepted -- he went and joined the Air Force. LOL

Life is funny.

I consider myself VERY lucky that this was never a problem for me. From the time I was in kindergarten / 1st grade I already knew I wanted to do "something in math or science". Which means suddenly that schools we think of that have "good engineering programs" suddenly become less attractive if they don't have good NucE programs. We were talking about visiting Texas, and then he realized that they don't even offer nuclear as a major... This has elevated programs like Purdue and Michigan while basically eliminating Illinois, and brought others like Georgia Tech that wasn't on his radar into view.

Hope your daughter figures it out!

I'm also a firm believer that for 16-18 year olds, it really shouldn't matter that much. They have so much of their lives ahead of them. Life will take turns. One minute you think you're headed to the University of Utah, the next thing you know, you're in the Air Force. That stuff keeps happening throughout life (or at least I think it's a lot more common than the average high schooler believes). They have plenty of time to figure out what they want to do; for the time being, they just need to do something.
Easy for me to say, harder for your daughter to process. And I agree with BRAD, there's a lot of social pressure around these things. And it can start really early (like middle school early).

By the time I was a junior in high school I had my choices narrowed down to Electrical/Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Theater Performance, and English Literature focusing on Creative Writing.

When I was a senior I decided I wanted to have the best shot at having a high-paying job out of college, and there was actually a glut of programmers on the market at the time, so EE it was.

I'd be delighted if my daughter could narrow it down to even the broad ideas I had early in high school, but she just doesn't know, and many of her friends do, which scares her. No matter how much we tell her she doesn't have to make any concrete decisions and just areas of interest would be helpful, she just can't get past her fears.

I think one of those personality profile tests might be good, not so much an aptitude test but rather something that helps determine potential career interests based on what you like (or don't).

It is almost verbatim what I told both my boys, and the advice I would give to Utee --- and it's probably worth what I get paid for it. Zilch.

But, as happened to me, and what I told both boys --- and they've lived it now a bit......Life happens to you, not so much you to it. When you get out of the nest, paths unfold before you, and your life vision will most certainly morph several times, totally beyond your control.

Make a well thought out first step, and take it. Life will happen, and doors will open, you will make choices, and some will be made for you.

When I was a HS junior, I had my choices narrowed down to architecture or civil engineering, going to some trade school on North Avenue. I guess I learned I probably couldn't make it as a civil engineer, or even as an uncivil one.

I told my kids to pick an in state school and I'd pay for it, they could major in whatever they found interesting. Neither went STEM at all, but it seems to have worked out for them. My first kid talked about physics at first and then suddenly it was about business, an odd transition. I was sending him library copies of business papers they were going to throw out. They first said I couldn't have them until I explained what they were for.

I was chatting with friends who live in NJ now, near Delaware, about how I almost went to work in Delaware. Flip of a coin.

All spot on takes. I just wish I could convince HER of it, to get her to take some first steps.

My wife has scheduled a campus visit at A&M in a couple of weeks, and I've scheduled one for UT, but she's been to both campuses frequently in her life so I'm not sure either one will generate much excitement. Maybe something a little smaller and more college-y, like Rice, would help.

My take is somewhat ironic in that if you had asked 16-year old me how things would turn out, I might have plotted something pretty close to what's actually happened. But that's probably more luck than anything else. And it certainly hasn't always felt like a straight line.
