So... I was thinking about this. Can someone explain to me the basic premise of Christianity?

I mean, I know that we have original sin from the days of Adam & Eve. And a vicious, judgmental Old Testament God that punished people when they did wicked things.

That makes sense, at least as far as religion makes sense. And then you add in things like sacrifices, i.e. material things you give up in order to show God you're sorry for the bad things you did and to atone.

But then, we get Jesus.

So the premise is that God is judgmental and will punish humans for sinfulness. Got it. So in order for God to forgive humans for our sinfulness, God has to take human form, God has to get nailed to a cross by Romans, and God has to die, in order for God to forgive us for the sins that God defined as sins?

Huh? God can't forgive us unless God's human form is killed by Romans? Doesn't make sense.

Pretty sure that's not something even Neil Gaiman would accept as a plot line...

The core premise is if you believe Jesus was Son of God and make an earnest public professions of that, you are assured of eternal life in Heaven.

Of course, different denominations would probably word it differently.

In Islam, you need to acknowledge Allah as the only God (Allah being the Arabic word for God) and try to live a good life.  It's based on works instead of faith.

I get that.

But why did God have to become human and die to save us from... God?

While you go hide under an Oak? I think he's right - makes absolutely no sense. But Jesus the prophet is pretty interesting and makes many compelling points in "The Sermon on the Mount". But never know who changed what back when.Very few could read or right so when the Church of Rome scribes in 325 AD took  ancient Jewish scrolls(old & new testament) and switched the text to book form(Bible) starting in 325 at Nicea and St Jerome starting finishing it in 382-405 AD translating both Greek and Hebrew into Latin

What could possibly be lost in the process?

Really exciting Indy 500.  Pato O'Ward sneaking in an impressively calm F bomb in his post race interview.

Tough way to lose the race, getting passed in turn 3 of final lap to Josef Newgarden.  Guy has had some tough luck.

lawmakers allow their non-religious beliefs to influence their policy decisions, as well

what's the difference?
One involves unprovable supernatural stories of illiterate goat-herders and the other simply deals in reality.

Yeah, basically the same thing.
.
a - I'm going to vote for/against this because God says it's best.
b - I'm going to vote for/against this because the evidence says it's best.

That's not even the most important part.......he rose from the dead!  You have to believe that, or else!
