Before the 1967 war, the US was not a major arms supplier for Israel. Most of their stuff was French and some British. In the Suez Crisis, we effectively were on the "other side" with Russia, against Israel/Britain/France. Israel became our ally when Egypt et al. went into the Soviet sphere for a while, Israel was a proxy in the Cold War. Then the Camp David Accords secured significant foreign aid to Israel, and Egypt, basically buying a peace treaty.
It seems everyone agrees Israel's days are not somehow numbered, though they are increasingly alienating themselves from the world. Their efforts to elimiinate Hamas likely will be counterproductive for them. I'm not sure what "two state solution" could be practicably enacted now. A good portion of the West Bank is in Israeli hands now in terms of settlements.
It's a mess. I don't think it's a simple mess at all, which is why it will persist for a long time no matter what other countries attempt. At least we slid by that Israeli-Iran tit for tat. That could have turned dangerously.
