I used to get asked what kind of car someone should buy.  Well, there is no answer without a lot of questions being answered.  If you have $100 K to spend and want an SUV, you definitely can get something superb, either track capable or imminently comfortable, or you could get an EV soonish.

If you want to spend $20 K on a new car, your options obviously get limited.  But you can still get something decent even there.  Cars today are really good, nearly all of them.
Was never fond of Corporate America but they have taken nauseating greed to a level that even I didn't think they would.Mechanic friend was telling me about how many models you can't even read your tire pressure with a simple guage any more. Each valve has it's individual sensor in it now and you have your read out on the dash digital readout. That sensor goes bad - 150.00 smackers, that's not covered under the drive train warranty. Many can't afford this heinous goughing. Those cocks don't deserve prosperity

Part of why I loved my '95 Jeep was that I could actually work on it.  I could go from stranded on the highway to back limping home, if needed.  In my '18 hatchback, I can't even attach jumper cables to the battery terminals (halfway up under the dashboard).

And the GD tire pressure sensor goes off every 2 weeks, because it's so sensitive.  I wish I could disable it.

I've had three cars with TPO sensors and none had this problem, including the 2018.  I had not heard about it.

The guy at the tire shop told me they're sensitive, I don't know the exact PSI that sets it off.
It may be a temperature thing (Phx in the summer) or it could just be that I'm lucky it's sensitive, because living in one ghetto and working in another makes for some sharp and prickly roads.
Maybe I should go work in Scottsdale, where the streets are flat, clean, and manicured.

I was losing pressure in a tire in the GTI not long after I bought it.  Once a week I'd have to put air in it, it got annoying.  They found a tiny nail in it, too near the sidewall, so I replaced it.  I would not have noticed its being low pressure without the TPMS.  It looked fine, and I don't routinely check pressure any more, or anything else.

I doubt the car makers added them to make more profit when they break.

Yeah, those sensors have alerted me to nails/screws that have been picked up in tires several times. Probably wouldn't have noticed until they were REALLY low otherwise.

With the exception of sometimes them starting to trigger when the temps get "cold" in the winter because of the change in air density, I've never had one fail on me that I can recall.

I'm having some issues with the rain-sensing wipers in the Flex, though... Not even sure where to begin with that crap.

2021 Porsche Macan Review, Pricing, and Specs (caranddriver.com)

The car across from us is a black Macan that the wife really likes.  There are very capable vehicles, this probably would be my choice among the breed.

With a refined chassis, strong turbocharged engines, and a comfortable cabin, the 2021 Porsche Macan is dual-purpose package unlike any other vehicle on the road today. It's equally at home tearing it up at a track day as it is running Sunday errands. Performance is impressive, and the Macan's suspension is poise personified: taut while cornering but not so firm that it sacrifices ride comfort on the work commute. It's this flexibility that earned the Macan a place on our 2021 10Best list as well as an Editors' Choice award. All-wheel drive is standard, and buyers can pick from one of three turbocharged engines. Some auto enthusiasts may kvetch about the infiltration of SUVs—and we're guilty of similar complaints—but with the Macan, there are so few compromises that it deserves respect from even the most ardent SUV detractors.

Kind of what I was saying yesterday.
if they offered a v8 I would have considered it.

Yeah, my kvetching is probably out of date on SUVs, at least higher end more capable types.

Maybe, maybe not.

I think you have a point. The higher CG of an SUV is not a good thing. Which means that the best SUVs will be worse at handling than the best sedans / coupes / sports cars.

And HB has a point as well. The best SUVs are better at handling than all BUT the best sedans / coupes / sports cars.

It's truly impressive that you have near-supercar performance in an SUV... It's still not truly supercar performance, but it's damn close enough for the type of people who are driving on public roads, and it's a much more versatile vehicle at the same time.

I drove to Vegas and back with a fat nail in my tire.  The car is 2 years old and I"ve replaced 3 of the tires already.  Everything out here is prickly and sharp and pepples everywhere.....I miss grass and water and mulch and not getting a flat tire every 6 months.
