If things expand when the get hotter why does water expand when it turns into ice
It expands because it forms a crystalline structure rather than simply coalescing into a solid.

As a thought experiment, have you ever thought about what would happen to the universe if water froze to be more dense as a solid than as a liquid, and thus sink? Would life be sustainable on Earth?

Based on all of the fishing gear I've left at the bottom of lakes I'd say yes

Earl's a funny dude.

My i s c & a aggie wife's Aggie dad was the GM of an oil distribution company, and his company was also great at putting on large-scale fish frys-- like for 2,000+ people.  It came about because they used to throw big fish fry parties for their customers, and their customers were very large companies like Shell, Texaco, etc.

They eventually evolved to where they catered other fish frys, because they already had the equipment and expertise and manpower to do it.  So for many years, they catered the VIP Fish Fry at the Texas Relays (which is a pretty big 3-day track and field event held at UT in Austin every year).  Lots of high school and college teams come in to compete from all over the state and country, which brings in a lot of college coaches for both track and football, and over time it became a big networking/socializing event for all sports-related people in the state, football and non-football.

So anyway, Earl Campbell naturally attends these kinds of events, and although alcohol wasn't ever on the menu, the crew always drank beer as they fried fish and served, and a few select, important guests, were always informally given some of it.  I actually offered Mack Brown a beer at the first one he attended in the Spring of 1998, a couple of months after he was hired but before he'd coached a game.  He politely declined.  It was Lone Star, so, I get it.

Earl is known for liking his beer, but he'd never accept when offered. I'd be "working" the event, which for me consisted of chatting with people far more important than I am and fetching them beer every so often.  So whenever I saw Earl, I'd be sure to walk over and offer him and his entourage some beers.  But he always refused and instead, he liked to slide around behind all the folks working the fryers and serving line, locate an ice chest with beer in it, and sneak some.  He'd do this several times throughout the evening, and it took 2-3 hours for us to serve all 2000+ folks coming through the lines.  I guess he liked the idea of getting away with something, but my FIL always had me specifically put that ice chest in a place Earl would be able to easily identify and access it. And it always made me smile seeing him slink along the back wall to find it and grab some.

Just one of those quirks, that make him such an interesting person.

Why do we park on a driveway, and drive on a parkway?
Why do Americans choose from just two people to run for president and 50 for Miss America?

Earl came into one of our BBQ restaurants and was quickly recognized and our manager comped his meal

Our restaurants were cafeteria style so there were no waiters or waitresses

never the less he left a $20 dollar tip when he left

Man, I miss having a fish fry at my Grandma's or Uncle's place in GA.  Fried catfish, fries, and all the hushpuppies (and no damn jalapenos in it!!!!!!!).  Just sweet vidalia onion in the mix.  Half of the puppies would be gone before the actual meal began.

Those were the days.

It would be a problem as a lot of water life survives winters at the bottom, and the oceans would freeze at the bottom.  The depths of oceans are around 39°F.

Interesting, ice made from D2O is heavier than liquid water, so if you see ice in your glass sinking, it means someone is trying to poison you.

Yup.  My FIL retired so I don't "help" him cater events all the time anymore, but he'll still fry some catfish 2 or 3 times per year and I make sure never to turn down one of those invitations.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The former CEO of Make-A-Wish Iowa has been arrested on three felony charges alleging she embezzled tens of thousands of dollars from the charity that supports sick children, the group confirmed Friday.

Jennifer Woodley, 40, was booked at the Polk County Jail in Des Moines on Thursday on two counts of first-degree theft and the unauthorized use of a credit card. She was released on bond.

Months after becoming its leader, Woodley secretly awarded herself a $10,000 bonus in October 2019 that had not been approved by the board, according to criminal complaints unsealed Friday.

The bonus, which Woodley added to a list of legitimate bonuses earned by other employees, cost the organization $15,540 in all, police said.

Woodley also made 84 unauthorized purchases on an organization credit card that were for her personal use, totaling more than $23,000 over a 10-month span, the complaints state. Woodley allegedly did not reimburse the group for those expenses.
