Our fridge has the heat exchanger underneath, not in the back.  Had to replace that also.  If you buy an older house or condo, figure on replacing most things.
I have an older house and I have no problem getting condensing or evap coils .There are specially designed stiff brushes that get under the front to the evap coil long/thin with short, stout bristles.or the back panel for condensing coil. You can use compressed air also - though that's dustyThere a videos on YT

I used to spend all spring mulching and planting and digging and mowing and trimming ....  not missing it at all.

I built these stone walls to level out the yard in places, we had huge pieces of flat limestone I'd run into digging to plant a tree.  I started digging just to find more stones.  Weird hobby.  That ended up being a nice backyard bordering on green space, I have a notion the new owner doesn't keep it up.

This is a water source heat exchanger, so the coils carry water, and the unit is completely contained, I can see it in the back.  This says I can clean the inside of the coils with acid, which I won't do.

Better talk to your tech about that, you could if you have drip pan & a drain. Not real familiar with that.Suppose it would be like the coils on the tankless heater that i used a vinegar solution that i circulated inside a 10 gallon tote with a pump

There is no pan, no drain, solid concrete floors.

It's fed by pretty heavy braided flexible pipes, and the connections are so tight and rusted the tech couldn't get them off and left them for fear removal might crack the feeder pipes.

So, I could only get the hoses off at the unit, which doesn't work for this process.  I won't be doing it.  I might text him about it.

It's a neat set up really, the older condos here have units on the roof that heat exchange with air which isn't efficient.

There are newer towers near us that have some rather massive evaporators on the ground.

Ya let a tech do it.Those connections even if you could get them off cleanly you could have the same  problem with the shut off  valves to isolate the unit.Rust, scale, sediment are a bitch. When you get new plumbing/ HVAC it's good to work the valves so they stay usable with time

So, I get this flyer in the mail for an AC inspection and such.

Guy comes out, pokes around and a bit later the wife comes into my office to get me. I'm thinking, oh shit...

And yep. The air handler is trashed. I wondered why it was laboring. Now I know. Full of growth and icky things.

So, new air handler, new AC unit, full on duct cleaning/sanitizing/sealing, R30 insulation in the attic.

It was cheaper to go new rather than replace parts. Plus, this comes with a 10 year warranty on parts and labor. It's a Champion system.

Another expense I did not expect right now. Damn.
I feel you on that one. I had to replace our entire HVAC system a week after my wedding. After paying for the lion's share of that, what's an HVAC system?

Grits of course were a way to preserve corn prior to refrigeration, which is most of our history.

I'm watching an Amazon show about the history of electricity, it's pretty decent.  We rarely give a thought to how important, nay essential, various technologies are in our lives.  Without electricity, we're in the steam age again.  What tech do we have that isn't dependent on it?  Maybe drugs?

house is about 40 years old, I've been there 30 years.

Replaced my HVAC system about 5 years ago.

Hopefully, this one lasts 30 years.
