The notion that ANY politician today is "fiscally conservative" to me is a bad joke.  None of them are beyond maybe some words.  Maybe some of the really kooky ones are.
On this, unfortunately, the problem is more "us" (meaning the voters) than "them" (meaning the politicians).

There is a local congress race in which one candidate or the other apparently said at some point that SS benefits need to be paired down.  His opponent is running his comments about raising the age and trimming the benefits on a loop.

As long as "we" are stupid enough to keep voting for unicorns and ferries, we can expect Politicians to keep promising things that are unsustainable.

Job growth stalls at 12,000 in October after hurricanes upend Southeast (thehill.com)

The jobs market appears to be slowing even aside from some special events happening.

Two ways (at least) to spur the economy, tax cuts and major spending, we have both, in spades.  Were either to be "adjusted" enough to matter, I think the economy would go into recession.

One of those bipartisan things where everybody gets screwed.

The Democrats loved giving out mortgages to unqualified minorities and then the Republicans jumped on board because Karl Rove (idiot) told them that if they made homeowners out of blacks and Hispanics they would suddenly suddenly realize that they had actually been Republicans all along and start voting like it.

So both parties pushed the idea that things like actually qualifying for a mortgage and putting up a down-payment were anachronistic and could be done away with.
Some conservatives didn't support it at all. Bush was not one of them. He let it ride as he figured it would cost him votes if he didn't. Terrible President.

I feel like every President (and probably every CEO) should have someone on their staff--someone trusted and personal--whose sole job it is to call them an idiot when they're being an idiot.

Because when you're surrounded by people who feel like a portion of their job has to be to fluff your ego for their own advancement, it's easy to start believing them.

If it were me, I have a very intelligent friend who has been my best friend since we were 2 years old. He'd be my first political appointment. And when the press asks "why is this guy in your inner circle?" the answer will be "because I trust him to always tell me the truth and call me an idiot if I'm being an idiot."

In my personal experience, folks who reach fairly lofty positions in companies do not want naysayers around them, at all, ever, it's career suicide to do so.  Most really think they got there because they are so much smarter and more capable than anyone else.  Most I knew got there because they were brown nosers.  The rest knew when to shut up and play ball.

Some of the bosses I had 2-3 levels up were plain vile, you really had to watch what you said around them.  Or try.

Many good leaders have just such a thing. or a staff and culture that works just like that.  Unfortunately none of them ( that I am aware of) are in politics.

I have been blessed to be around many leaders who were/are exceptions to this.  But yes- what you say is valid. Just not universal.

“She’s a radical war hawk. Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, OK?” the former president said at a campaign event in Glendale with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. “Let’s see how she feels about it, you know, when the guns are trained on her face.”

As I've said my typical vote here in CA for the Presidency is for the Libertarian candidate. I don't have to worry about voting for the lesser of two evils, as the outcome in this state is never in doubt. So--to the extent anyone cares--my vote is a vote of no confidence in the major parties.

It doesn't even matter what whack-job the Libertarians have nominated; it's not like I'm voting for the person, and it's not like the vote matter because they'll never get elected. It's purely done as a reflection on the major candidates.
I wish they were run by their more regular wackadoos. Their current crop are not great.

The counter-argument is that it was just a REALLY bad situation that was going to end horrifically no matter what.
If your answer is "well, I guess we have no choice but to align with the folks that think Jews are a pestilence to be eliminated and the cause of all our issues," you can get all the way fucked. Fuck the monster who pushed it, and fuck the weaklings who joined along.

If we need to stand for counter arguments that back that, we're too weak to stand for much.

Seem to me he was running the country, since he fired anyone who didn't align with him.
Seems like most of the firings were related to his various scandals. Otherwise, he seemed mostly MIA except for photo ops. Also, he seems to enjoy firing people. Wasn't that his whole thing?

And our businesses found a way to leverage it into great financial windfalls, albeit with a whole lot of fraud! What a time.
