I like my turkey on thanksgiving - not in my chili
Turkey goes great in many soups and stews, turkey gumbo is a treat.

So a chile-flavored turkey soup is probably quite tasty.

Good point.  I've never had Brunswick Stew but from the descriptions I find online, that chicken soup recipe above, is much more like Brunswick Stew than it is like real actual chili.

Brunswick stew is pretty different from "chicken chili" in taste and ingredients.  (I don't use "salt pork", but pulled pork, in about equal amounts to "chicken parts".)

Ingredients
  • 4 ounces diced salt pork
  • 2 pounds chicken parts
  • 8 cups water
  • 3 potatoes, cubed
  • 3 onions, chopped
  • 1 (28 ounce) can whole peeled tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 cups canned whole kernel corn
  • 1 (10 ounce) package frozen lima beans
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

I feel like when I first had Brunswick stew I’d rather enjoy it, but the next few times it was a little too barbecue-ish, so I stopped.

It's basically just another thicker soup.  I like it, usually.  It can vary of course.  I like okra in soups a lot personally, that won't be universal of course.  I make "refrigerator soup" at times with whatever we have that looks like it might be about to go bad.  I always try and add frozen okra.

Fried okra is about my favorite veggie if done right.

If you go to a BBQ place in the southeast it's very likely to have Brunswick stew as a side, along with fries, slaw, rings ...  I infer that stops being likely west of the Mississippi, and maybe even 100 miles or more east of that.  They didn't have it in Cincy very often at places, so maybe into TN you don't see it much.

Fox Bros here has it, and it's good, I think, and the Bros. are Texans.  That is my "go to place", though I read about some other spots I've yet to try here.  One thing to avoid of course is going to a "Chilis" and seeing BBQ on the menu.  Don't.  The bor/restaurant next to us has BBQ on the menu, it's edible, I tried it.  But not good.  I think they buy it from "Kroger", or Sysco, already done.  They do some things well, usually fried things, like Totchos (which they claim to have invented).

The other regional thing here that is popular is shrimp and grits, which most places serve for brunch.  It's literally grits, with some shrimp in it, and maybe some cheese whatever.  It's OK to me, but they can charge $20 for it, basically grits which are about as low cost as a thing can be, and four shrimp.  The other thing is chicken and waffles, which I also don't "get".  The chicken can be pretty good, fried of course, fine, but with waffles?

Folks apparently sit around drinking and pondering "What can we serve as some weird combination that is cheap and charge $20 for?".

Buffalo wings has a similar kind of story.

It usually isn’t, but this one, goddamn.

I’m gonna get myself in trouble, but The style of chili that you prefer, can you provide a picture of what this actually looks like? I got some chili from a Texas style barbecue restaurant, and it was very good, but it was kind of more suited as a topping than something standalone.

The best veggies are the ones that are fried.

If Medina and Max aren't careful, this thread is going to start discussing chili right quick.

Or something like that.

By the time I got around to considering LASIK, I was kinda close to the Point where it might not totally be worth it. Plus, nearly a decorative contact had left me with some dry eye issues that I didn’t really feel like exacerbating.

Such as life. I like my glasses just fine.
I am quite blind without my glasses (-14.50 in one eye and -14.75 in the other). They cannot get my vision to 20/20 with contacts. I cannot get lasik as they can't correct my vision enough.  I went to try to get clear lense replacement and they told me they couldn't get me to the place I won't need glasses, so no sense in paying $8,000 just to get a lower prescription.  I have a slight cataract, so if and when they get to the place that I need surgery I will go ahead and have them correct my vision as much as they can.  I am dreading that it might happen one day that I can't wear contacts and I will have to wear my glasses all the time.

in the meantime, I have developed glaucoma.  Thankfully with my vision being so bad, I make regular visits to the eye doctor and it was discovered very early so unlike most, I didn't have much damage to my eye sight when found and with treatment, I have had almost no progression in the last 6 years.

I am the proverbial blind referee

but has undeniable benefits for societies everywhere.
I have liked so many of your takes on many topics lately, but this statement seems very slanted. It certainly has some benefits, but those seemed to be heavily outweighed by the strain and stress placed on societies. If you need proof, without needing slanted data one way or another, jump on 71 and drive north. I'll take you through high immigration areas and then I'll take you to some rural areas that have similar economic and financial demographics. If you can tell me there's not undeniable negative impact, i'd be very very surprised.

After head surgery, something happened where I couldn't wear contacts and was forced to wear glasses all the time. It was absolutely terrible so i understand your hope to avoid. After the rest of me was healthy enough, i opted for Lasik.. and wish i would have 10 years ago. Completely life changing. Wore contacts for 33 years at that point.. Waking up and just being able to see without scrambling to find glasses or put contacts in was an amazing life change. Hope you find a solution because i learned what I had been missing for 30 years.

been wearing glasses since I was 6

tried contacts a couple times in my 20s - to avoid glasses
with my activities outdoors, especially riding motorcycles... contacts just didn't work

and with my stigmatism - I couldn't see as well

glasses don't seem like a bad option for me
