I looked up upscale Mexican restaurants in the ATL.  I got a list of popular restaurants, blech.  Number Ten is a place we go fairly often, but it's clearly a Spanish Tapas kind of place, not bad at all, but Spanish, not Mexican.

Disappoint.

This is perhaps the most upscale in the area, I didn't check them all.

October 2020 (casicieloatl.com)

It looks decent and one menu item is $43 (steak), but most are in the teens.

I don’t live so far from you, and man there is a dearth of quality Mexican in this part of the country. Maybe something lower scale?

We have "good Mexican" places all over here, in my view, places where we're the only nonHispanics, but they tend to be inexpensive.

I was pondering an "upscale" Mexican place, like  the French place we like, where the entrees range from $20-50.  Might not be any better than the holes in the wall.

Buford Highway is "famous" for Mex. and the ones we've tried are good, IMHO.

That was my question.  We have "upscale" French, Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, etc., but upscale Mexican sounds like an oxymoron.

For the reasons y'all are calling out, "upscale Mexican" is a tough sell, especially down here when every single strip center has a Mexican or Tex-Mex place in it.

That's why they tend to only do "upscale" for interior and coastal Mexican, and not Tex-Mex.

Upscale Mexican is probably the best meal I've ever eaten. The imagination alone was incredible. 

And, no. No tacos, burritos, enchiladas.

Yup, interior and coastal Mexican have some amazing flavor combinations.  But down here there are tons of interior and coastal Mexican places that aren't "upscale" and are still delicious, so the "upscale" really refers more to the quality of ingredients and how thoughtfully the menu is curated.

The "regular" places are going to serve traditional dishes from family recipes, while the upscale joints are going to get more creative with the ingredients.  Both can be excellent of course.

The carne asada I had was a ribeye center/filet, a 28 ingredient mole and fois gras, with a diakon radish salad. 

That was one of seven courses.

Even the wine pairings were brilliant.

there's so much excellent Mexican here that is inexpensive, there's really no need to search out something that costs 3 or 4 times as much

now the atmosphere of the dining experience is what I'd pay more money

That's the idea. The food at these places is unlike anything else.

Think of Mexican flavors prepared using French techniques.

Yeah, but in your part of the country a good wine pairing is Taco Bell with Baja Blast.
