I mean, it's probably hard to put butts in seats if you don't even know who you're playing...

So Arizona has a Buccees open out west of Phoenix.  It's on the news.  Okay.
People camped out for hours before it opened.
Why?
The news cameras are showing the avalanche of people going in.  Okay, black Friday vibes.  Whatever.  Novelty.  Okay.

But the looks on their faces.
Madness.
Manic faces.  Orgasmic faces.

I can't help but chalk this up as evidence that our society is broken.
Manic, obsessive behaviors at a gas station to buy shit they don't need and at least some can't afford.
A certain % of our people are unwell.  They have a job, they make kids (a lot more kids than the well), they obey some traffic laws.  But they are unwell.

It's like the guys who desire these women with the cartoon lips and watermelon-inflated breasts.  There's never "too much."  They want more, radical, severe, and total.  Yes, like the 0.1% people, financially.  Never enough.

I know you guys will just roll your eyes at this, and I honestly didn't think much of it - stupid people obsessing over a fucking gas station, blah blah.
But the looks on their faces as they entered concerned me, genuinely.

I heard it was like this when the first White Castle opened around here.
Who is this population of zealots who obsessively value literally anything novel to them?  What is that mindset?
I wish I hadn't seen the footage, to be honest.

Folks lined up for miles here when the first In n Out opened.  And when Krispy Kreme opened.

Weird people do weird things.  No explaining it.

Forget the opening.  I've been saying for years I don't understand people's infatuations with regular Buccees that have been open already.

They have a lot of lanes, so you don't usually have to wait in line at the pump.  They have clean bathrooms.

Cool.

Still didn't explain how some people look forward to going.  It's a gas station that hijacked some of Walmart's more worthless aisles.

Well White Castle is understandable.  When you have to go years without White Castle to finally have one in the area is a must go.  Though I admit, I waited until the crowds somewhat died down before going.

otoh, many people have cast a skeptical glance in my direction in days gone by over my obsession with a bunch of 18-22 year olds, moving a ball around for fun, at a place I ultimately chose not to attend, with no meaningful real-world consequences.

The answer, of course--if there was a question in the first place--is that I got something out of it.  A happier mental state was achieved by focusing on the objectively meaningless sport.  Was I any better off?  Not measurably.  But I thought I was.

I suspect that's telling.

These people slobbering over the idea of Buccees.....they're getting something out of it.  For some reason it's making them happy.  I don't know why, it doesn't make sense to me.

But then my football fandom never made sense to my mom, among many others.

But I'm not talking about  just going to a place.
That's what you do.  That's what it's for.

The grand opening psychotics scare me.  I just don't understand it.  I can't reverse-engineer the thought process.
Is it that their day-to-day lives are so awful?  That anything shiny and new is deemed magical and special?

Getting gas there?  Cool.  Appreciate cleanliness?  Sure, that's as good a reason for some loyalty as any.
But to inundate it when it opens, looking like Christian Bale chasing his human prey, is again, unwell.

Many would say that obsessing over a college football team whilst wearing an orange afro wig is a sign of being unwell.

Sure.
But what's their connection with a gas station?
My 'obsession' with Florida football is bourn of enjoying the watching and playing of football my whole life.  The university I attended and graduated from has a football team that competes against other schools.  It's fun to watch and I'm happy when they win.  The only moments I even approach the frantic looks on the faces I saw entering Buccees is when there's a last-second score for a win.

Now, you could possibly say Buccees competes with other gas stations for business and offers unique aspects or products to stand out to attract customers....but still, where's the connection?
And it's just buying stuff, right?  The frenzied faces aren't going there for the sheer joy of window shopping at a gas station, are they?

I'm not really trying to talk down about these people, I'm emphasizing that I don't understand their behavior.  Even as an ardent fan of a team sport that ultimately means nothing, I still don't understand them.
