ETA: Forgot to say, I usually don't take the time to post in this thread much, but #18 is now a tradition at LSU, and this is the guy who originated it. Matt Mauck, QB for the 2003 team, wore #18 and requested to hand his number down to Jacob Hester. Both were team leader kind of guys, and since then, #18 has been given to someone the team looks up to. I believe the number is voted on by the team now instead of directly handed from player to player. It's also at the discretion of the coach, and there's been no word on if Kiffin will keep the tradition going, but no reason so far to think he won't. #18 has been worn at a variety of positions at this point, including at least one lineman who had to get NCAA permission to wear a #18 patch on his sleeve, as his position precluded him from using 18 on the front and back of the jersey.
