Texas played a solid game with few errors.

The pass rush completely disappeared in the second half, the coaches need to figure out why that happened and fix it.

And continuously going for it on 4th down, resulting in 3 turnovers on downs, when putting points on the board via field goal was a viable option for at least two of them and would have put you 3 scores up, is completely unacceptable for a coaching staff in its 4th year.  Sark has to learn to do better.  That's pure coaching arrogance and stupidity.  THREE turnovers on downs.  Just absolutely intolerable.

On the other hand, the rushing game was clicking and Ewers played a solid game with a 70% completion percentage, 1 TD, and an INT that wasn't his fault at all.  The offense finally showing out for the first time in the past 5 or 6 games was a welcome change.

He's terrifying.  Longhorn defense is good but that dude is going to get his yards.

Longhorn D will definitely be the toughest one ASU has seen all year, and we're still without our #1 WR so scoring points on y'all is definitely gonna be a challenge. I'm excited.
I thought I settled my debts that night on the ride home

for much of the 2nd half we only rushed 4 using a prevent defense. not sure why

Yeah we definitely went prevent for some of it, but we also just got shut down.  That's a problem that needs to be addressed.

The good news is Klubnik is the best QB we'll face in the playoff unless/until facing Oregon.  He really impressed me, that kid is a baller.

Texas wins with only 2 penalties for 10 yards

The refs were from the Big10 and will be calling The Texas vs Ariz St game as well
That was a good win--congrats!

Gets you to a meeting with Arizona State. Old Big 12 vs. New Big 12.

So far, the CFP games haven't been very close. I'd gladly go back to four teams. Or, better yet, two.

I think 12 is too many would rather see 8

the Horns have their work cut out for them against Ariz St

not sure what the health status is for us

The refs kept their flags in their pockets. They did it both ways, so I really can't (won't) complain. Colin Simmons was having to tow the LT towards the QB over and over. That's your "what happened to the pass rush".
Texas used the same leniency to send the ground game hurtling towards the end zone. I'm sure Clemson fans can point out several game breaking instances (I saw them myself) where holding was pivotal and obvious.
Cade Klubnik made himself some extra dollars by using the pass protection to drop absolute dimes onto his receivers. Clemson played out of their minds for like 20 game minutes there.

Scattered thoughts on yesterday’s game:

Figured after recently playing Clemson, and familiar with the Atlanta setting from the SEC Championship, Texas would be properly tuned against an ASU team that might’ve grown rusty during the weeks they had off. That seemed to be how the first half played out. Then as the game moved along into the 2nd half, Texas played tired, especially the Longhorns defense.

What is with the OL? Pushing around solid Texas A&M & Clemson defenses but consistently pushed back by Georgia and Arizona State.

The Refs? So many penalties called against Texas, especially the secondary, especially in the 2nd half.

The old Sarkisian is coming back to haunt us; throughout stints at Washington and USC, his teams had the talent advantage 80-90% of the time, yet he was outcoached the in the majority of games, which dropped his short tenures to just above .500 at both Washington and USC. And now the same dynamic is creeping up at the highest pressure times for Texas. Good on Texas for increasing a late lead to 24-8, but after that, the play selection was all over the place. There was a point late in the game, deep in ASU territory, where, in the most obvious rushing situation, Texas passed three straight times. Reminded me of his passing emphasis while calling plays for the Falcons with a big lead in the Super Bowl lost to the Patriots on a blown lead.

Had our FG kicker done the job he has been doing all year the result would have been much better.

We won the game by out playing them when it counted

Now we need to start looking at OSU and figuring out how not to get blown out.

I'm curious as to the thought process (or lack thereof) occurring when Texas had the ball following ASU's first TD. 6:30 left.
First down eats up 6 yards. Clock running. Favorable down and distance.
So, of course, Texas tries on a deep pass that gets picked. Several uncanny and suspicious things later, the score's tied 24-24.
Now, arguably, the play itself worked. The defense was misaligned, and an appropriate pass to the center of the field would have easily gained 20 yards. Quinn threw it so deep that the DBs were able to catch up and grab the INT.
However, it seems that two more power runs there were likely to earn you a first down - one which would have all but killed ASU's ability to recover. Even if Texas weren't able to gain the 4 yards on 2 plays, killing the additional 2 minutes plus punt was a very good outcome.

I feel like we needlessly and senselessly contributed to our own downfall.

Both of the above posts kind of center on one thing-- when playing with a decent lead, Sark has a tendency to get too cute and ends up outsmarting himself.  It's really frustrating.

Thinking about the upcoming game against tOSU, Texas just makes everything so much harder on themselves.  The talent is there for sure.  Is the coaching/discipline/fundamentals at a lower level?  Sometimes it looks great, and sometimes it looks like a circus of confusion and ineptitude.

Texas can beat any team remaining in the playoff.  I expect Texas to show up and give a good game against the Buckeyes.  I just don't think the team is 100% present and while that can still get you an OT win against ASU, it's not going to be enough against Ohio State.
