But oddly, they've allowed OC Charlie Weis, Jr. to return to coach the Rebears in the playoffs.  Weis has followed Kiffin to LSU to be the OC in Baton Rouge. @utee94 's and @OrangeAfroMan 's point about tampering with players from the inside still applies.  Why allow that?  They might as well just allow Kiffin to coach them.

It seems to me like they're not worried about the valid point regarding sabotaging the program from within, and more like they're just mad at Kiffin and don't want him around.  Which.....fair enough.  But it's odd to let Weis go back and coach the team.

Totally agree and I think it's a mistake in the exact same way that allowing Kiffin to stick around would have been.

I think they were worried about the exact thing we've speculated about-- the playoff committee dumping them in the same way they dumped a QB-less FSU a few years ago-- and this is their way of trying to display some coaching continuity to maintain their CFP positioning.

It's a balancing act they're attempting, and I suspect ultimately it's not going to go well for them.

3 players previously committed to Ole Miss flipped to LSU yesterday.  That's probably not unexpected in a situation like this, but it highlights how ill-advised it could be to let Weis whisper in the players' ears in person with more transfer portal windows to come.

I mean....don't get me wrong....screwing over Ole Miss 8 ways from Sunday is my favorite part of all this....I'm just trying to decipher their logic :)

Yeah.

The departing coaches are going to try to flip everyone anyway.  But when Ole Miss allows a departing coach to remain and coach the post-season, you now have NO ONE in a coaching position at your university, advocating for Ole Miss.  There's no one to counter the message coming from the departing staff and indeed, your acting head coach, is no doubt one of the ones attempting to subvert from the inside.

It's a really dumb move.

Aren't there rules dictating if/how/when coaches from other schools can contact players?  I know in the recruiting process there are prohibitions on contacting players at certain times...."dead periods" or something like that, as well as limitations on how much contact you can have.  Seems like there would be something similar in place regarding contact with current players.

If there is, that would be a big difference in an LSU coach waving at you from a distance but who can't contact you much (at least in theory) vs. a guy leading your playoff team who can talk to you every single day.  It would be a big, big difference in how you're protecting your future roster.

I'm not sure there are any rules about contacting current players?  I mean, Kiffin is potentially friends with all of his former team at Ole Miss.  Why can't one friend text another friend?

Trying to make a rule against something like that, would be kind of silly and I'm pretty sure would get thrown out of any court in the country.

And anyway, it's all done through agents now anyway.  Arms-length comms and whatnot.

But even so, yeah, giving your current interim head coach the opportunity to advocate for LSU instead of the school he's actually coaching for, is, well, really dumb.

If you ain't cheating you ain't trying?

Also:  should we start a thread to lay bets for where Lane Kiffin leaves LSU in the middle of the night, or do we just keep it here?  I figure he either leaves for Bama or the NFL.  Other than that it probably just means he was fired.

A big part of this is that the playoff setup makes it unlikely for any specific team to win the NC, even the 1-seed.

If this was back in the day and OM was simply facing a bowl game for a potential NC, OM would keep him to try to win it.  The reward would be worth the risk, easily.

But a 4-game gauntlet where no team is anywhere likely to survive, no, it's not prudent to allow your outgoing HC to stick around and mettle with players and personnel.

in addition to this change is the effect of the portal era. it's one thing for a coach to stay & coach the bowl game when any player they might try to talk into going w/ them to the new place has to sit out a season. now of course they can bounce immediately.

probably for om there is no good choice. based on the one they made relative to weiss coming back for the playoff i'm guessing there's no one on the staff that's staying over permanently that is a reasonably suitable choice to call plays. they're eff'd either way.
