Until ESPN offered money in the midst of their chess moves intended to influence conference realignment, everyone was projecting that a Texas single-school network would lose money.  Texas was planning on operating at a loss.

Once again prior to the LHN the Big 12 voted not to pursue a conference network which UT wanted but several other schools were against

When that happened it opened the door for ESPNs LHN proposal
We'll never know what the impact of a conference network--which favored--would have had. Or what equal revenue-distribution, a la the SEC, would have accomplished.
But I think it's pretty clear that visionary leadership was lacking in the Big 12 in the '00s.

I've seen it reported that the Big 12 chose not to support a network, but I've never understood why.  Especially considering that that was about the time the other conferences started theirs up.

BTN and SECN hadn't yet really begun, and it was thought that conference networks were money-losing propositions.  "We've never gotten much money for those Tier2 and Tier3 rights before, why would we now?"  was the thinking.

Clearly it was wrong, but nobody in the B12 (or B1G or SEC) knew it at the time.

There are a couple of reasons why those Tier2/3 rights all of a sudden became more valuable than anyone expected, and also why they're imminently going to decline in value.  The peak of the linear conference network has probably already passed us, but there's still value to be had there, for a while.

Attention to sports in general, and college sports particularly, is waning.  Kids these days don't care as much about sports, they're not going to the games, they won't be taking their own kids to the games, so they won't be watching the games on TV-- the downward spiral continues.

On the flipside, YouTube viewing of other people playing video games, has skyrocketed.  Yay, progress.

REALLY happy for Maalik Murphy being named the starting QB at Duke.  He was a fantastic team player whilst at Texas and he deserves his shot at showing out as the starter.

He's got all the tools to be an absolutely gonzo college QB. However, he's exactly the kind that Sark doesn't prefer.

He was the perfect Texas teammate. Glad he'll get the chance to show the world his talent.

OK I guess it's time to go ahead and start a Longhorn football thread on the SEC board.

Feels weird, but here we are in 2024...
